Roshan Kanakala, son of popular anchor Suma Kanakala and actor Rajeev Kanakala, has turned hero with the youthful romantic drama, Bubblegum, hitting screens today. Check out our review to know whether the movie serves as a delightful treat or leaves us yearning for more.
Story:
Sai Aditya, aka Adhi (Roshan Kanakala), a middle-class guy dreaming of becoming a DJ, gets drawn to Jahnavi (Manasa Chaudhary), a rich girl. They both fall in love, and their romantic relationship takes a twist when an incident unfolds, leading Jahnavi to publicly embarrass Adhi. The movie unfolds the aftermath – did they part ways or reconcile?
Plus Points:
In his debut, young hero Roshan Kanakala surprisingly impresses, expressing emotions and showing off his dance moves with ease. Coming from an acting family, he shows promise, just needing to choose the right scripts.
Manasa Chaudhary fits well as the rich girl, bringing in glamour and performance, especially in the second half.
An unexpected highlight is Adhi’s father, played by Chaitu Jonnalagadda (brother of actor Siddhu Jonnalagadda). His dialogues and actions bring laughs, while Bindu Chandramouli, playing his wife, does a commendable job.
Minus Points:
The story falls short, offering a tale we have already seen numerous times. But when Ravikanth Perupu is at the helm of directing and writing, one would expect catchy phrases that spice the story up, just like in his previous film, Krishna & His Leela.
While the story is okay, Ravikanth could have narrated it more straightforwardly, dealing with repetitive scenes in the first half and overly dramatic moments in the latter half.
Characters played by Harsha Chemudu, Harshavardhan, and Anu Haasan could have been better written, as they don’t do justice to the actors’ potential.
Technical Aspects:
Writer and director Ravikanth Perupu doesn’t quite hit the mark with his storytelling. Sricharan Pakala’s music fits well, and Suresh Ragutu’s cinematography is decent. The editing, handled by a team of technicians, including Ravikanth Perupu, could have been cleaner. Trimming unnecessary scenes for a shorter runtime might have improved this love tale.
Verdict:
On the whole, Bubblegum is another routine romantic love drama that falls a bit short of being a thorough entertainer. Despite commendable performances from debutants Roshan Kanakala and Manasa Chaudhary, the film grapples with a lackluster screenplay, repetitive elements, and unnecessary drama that creates a disconnect from the main plot. While it may strike a chord with a section of the youth, the romantic scenes don’t cater well to the family audiences.
