Chakkora – Lunar Love Bird has arrived in cinemas today. Directed by debutant Manga Srinivas, the romantic drama features Sravan and Malaika T Vasupal in the lead roles. Let’s see how the film turns out.

Story:

Ravana (Sravan) is a carefree youth who falls in love with Julie (Malaika T Vasupal), a doctor, at first sight. While he believes she is his true soulmate, she initially brushes off his advances. Eventually, she agrees to reciprocate on one condition: he must stay completely out of contact for 24 hours without meeting or calling her. Ravana accepts the challenge, but once the time elapses, Julie vanishes without a trace. The rest of the narrative tracks his frantic search to track her down and uncover what truly happened.

Plus Points:

In our mythologies, the Chakora bird is obsessed with the moon and dreams of flying toward it. The director uses this myth as a neat metaphor here, comparing the hero’s endless search to the bird and the heroine to the moon. It’s an interesting thematic idea on paper.

Sravan does an okay job for a newcomer and tries his best in the emotional scenes, dances, and fights. Malaika looks pretty on screen and gives a restrained performance.

The music is easily the biggest relief in the film. Prince Henry delivers a couple of good tunes, and his background score helps keep a few flat scenes moving.

Minus Points:

The biggest problem with the movie is how painfully familiar it feels. You can guess where the story is headed from a mile away, right down to the climax. We have seen these exact romantic tropes in dozens of Telugu films before, and the sluggish screenplay only makes it harder to sit through. On top of that, the heavy, unnatural rhyming dialogues feel forced and drain the emotion out of the scenes.

The comedy with Sudarshan and the rest of the gang completely misses the mark. There isn’t a single memorable laugh because every single gag feels recycled.

The first half already feels slow, but the second half drags even more with repetitive scenes and zero surprise factor. Senior actors like Indraja and Brahmaji are wasted in poorly written roles that give them nothing meaningful to do.

Technical Aspects:

Debutant director Manga Srinivas might have had good intentions with the core concept, but his treatment is too dramatic and turns the film into a test of patience. Prince Henry’s music is the only technical department that leaves a mark. The cinematography by Ruppa G Krsna and editing by Marthand K Venkatesh don’t add much value to the pacing, while the production values are just about ordinary.

Verdict:

On the whole, Chakkora – Lunar Love Bird is a predictable romantic drama that tests your patience. The lead pair gives an honest effort, and the music offers some relief in places. However, the outdated story, flat comedy, and heavy rhyming dialogues drag the experience down. You can comfortably give this one a skip.
