Rakul Preet Singh’s new Hindi film Chattriwali opted for a direct OTT release. The movie is currently streaming on ZEE5, and let’s find out how it is.

Story:

Ratan Lamba (Satish Kaushik) owns a condom company in the town of Karnal. He is in urgent need of a condom quality control head. Sanya Dhingra (Rakul Preet Singh) lives in the same town and keeps searching for jobs. Sanya takes tuitions for school children to make a living. Ratan happens to meet Sanya one day and offers her the quality checker job after getting impressed by her skills. Though Sanya doesn’t like the job, she accepts the offer as she badly needs money. Sanya marries Rishi (Sumeet Vyas), who hails from a conservative family. Sanya hides the details of her job in the maternal house. As days pass by, Sanya ends up liking her job. One day Rishi’s family gets to know about Sanya’s job. What did Sanya do then? What happened next? The movie has the answers.

Plus Points:

The movie team needs to be appreciated for coming up with such a bold yet relevant topic that actually needs awareness. Chattriwali emphasizes the usage of condoms which is considered a taboo in India. It stresses the problems undergone by women in society due to the excessive use of contraceptive pills. The movie also highlights the need for sexual education in schools.

Special mention to Rakul Preet Singh for being part of the film, which stresses an important social message. The actress shined in Sanya’s role, and she carried the movie on her shoulders. Rakul is a terrific performer, and she proves the same with Chattriwali. She is a delight to watch in the film, and Rakul did her role with complete conviction.

Rajesh Tailang’s character is neatly written, and the actor was a perfect cast for the role. As the head of a conservative family and biology teacher, Rajesh Tailang did complete justice. Comparatively, the second half has decent moments, and the climax portions worked well. The other artists were okay in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

It is not enough if the point taken is good, but it also needs to be told engagingly. This is where Chattriwali falters. Apart from a few scenes, the film remains boring for the most part. The bland writing and tedious moments reduce the impact as a whole.

The first half, in particular, is patience-testing. Nothing happens effectively here, nor does the first hour has any good moments. The love track enhances the boredom, and more care should have been taken to set up the story properly. Like many recent films, the movie is completely predictable.

Last year, a Bollywood film came up along similar lines to Chattriwali. Hence the ones who watched it might feel Chattriwali is entirely identical to it except for the locations and artists. A few aspects of the film needed more depth, and they were presented just at the surface level. Satish Kaushik’s character had more scope, but his screen time was restricted as the movie progressed.

Technical Aspects:

The music is just about okay. The songs aren’t great, but the background score is good. The cinematography by Siddharth Bharat Vasani is exemplary. The production values are neat, and the editing by Shruthi Bora is decent.

Coming to the director, Tejas Prabhaa Vijay Deoskar, he did an ordinary job with the movie. The movie’s message is strong, but the execution is not up to the mark. Sanchit Gupta and Priyadarshi Srivastava, who handled the story and screenplay, could have done better by coming up with a tight screenplay. Despite the film having more potential, it doesn’t rise above an extent due to the narrative issues.

Verdict:

On the whole, Chattriwali is a film that highlights the importance of sex education in the country. Rakul’s power-packed performance and a few scenes in the second half are its strengths. The core point chosen is good but engaging narration was the need of the hour. Hence Chattriwali ends up just an okay watch for the social message it carries.
