After a three-year wait, Netflix has released the sequel to one of its best action thrillers, Extraction. Starring Chris Hemsworth in the lead role, Extraction 2 has released on Netflix today. Check out our review to find out whether the sequel lived up to the hype or not.

Story

Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a mercenary, retires after surviving a dangerous mission in Bangladesh. However, he is approached by a stranger (Iris Elba) who asks him to save Ketevan (Tinatin Dalakishvili), the imprisoned sister of his ex-wife Mia (Olga Kurylenko), along with her children Sandro (Andro Japardize) and Nina (Marta Kovziashvili). Tyler accepts to free them from the prison and starts his mission. Who imprisoned Ketevan and the kids? Who is Zurab (Tornike Gogrichiani) and how is he related to the mission? Did Tyler succeed in his mission? The main movie has all the answers.

Plus Points

Director Sam Hargrave, who also directed the prequel, handles the film very well. Noted director Joe Russo’s screenplay is also fine.

In terms of performance, Chris Hemsworth is a perfect fit for the role, portraying the ruthless mercenary and emotional adult impressively. His performance is exceptional.

The duo Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani) and Yaz Khan (Adam Bessa), who helped Tyler in his professional-turned-personal mission, deserve appreciation. Golshifteh Farahani captures everyone with her charm and stunts.

Actor Tornike Gogrichiani as Zurab justifies his role and truly embodies the character. Idris Elba has limited screen time, but his importance for the next part is revealed in the climax. The rest of the actors perform well in their respective roles.

Those who loved the 12-minute single-shot action sequence in the first part will be even more surprised by the 21-minute in-prison action sequence, shot without any cuts. It’s one of the highlights of the film.

Minus Points

The film lacks a strong story. While Tyler is on another rescue mission, this time driven by his family, the story is rather simple. However, Joe Russo’s narration saves the film.

The emotional drama between Tyler and his wife is fine, but the makers should have depicted a stronger emotional bond between Ketevan and her kids. It would have added more depth and drama to the film. Sandro’s character could have been written better.

Though the film is an action thriller, some scenes may feel over the top. While they are entertaining to watch, they are unrealistic.

The climax fight appears forced, and the lack of twists and turns makes it predictable. Writer Joe Russo could have injected more surprises into the story.

Technical Aspects

Director Sam Hargrave did an excellent job, but he could have made the sequel more interesting by having Joe Russo write a crisp and less predictable story. The camera work by Greg Baldi is superb, especially during the action scenes.

The score is okay. Editors Álex Rodríguez and William Hoy did a fine job, but the film would have been even better if they had trimmed a few unnecessary scenes in the second hour. The production values are high, and it shows in the film. The runtime works well and contributes to making it a decent watch.

Verdict

On the whole, Extraction 2 is a decent action thriller with a simple story and a fine screenplay. However, it is not as great as the prequel. Chris Hemsworth’s performance and the action sequences are the film’s strengths, and action movie lovers will enjoy it more. Despite a few over-the-top stunts and unnecessary scenes, the film is worth watching this weekend.
