Kiran Abbavaram’s new film Chennai Love Story is now out in theatres. The movie directed by Ravi Namburii features Sri Gouri Priya as the female lead. Baby fame Sai Razesh provided the story and screenplay besides producing it alongside SKN. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Nivedita (Sri Gouri Priya) is going through a tough phase after an unexpected event turns her life upside down. Her friends take her to Chennai so that she can come out of this dull phase. This is when Steven Shankar (Kiran Abbavaram) enters Nivedita’s life. He aims to become a top film director, but struggles to fulfill his dream. Initially, Nivedita doesn’t like Steven, but she gradually develops feelings for him before another incident once again shatters her life.

Plus Points:

The first half of the film is carried by Mani Sharma’s soulful music and some very good moments featuring the lead pair. The female lead’s emotional turmoil is portrayed convincingly, and the narrative moves at a good pace while effectively establishing the male protagonist’s character.

Sri Gouri Priya is one of the best finds of the industry, and she delivers a brilliant performance, especially in the emotional segments. The Telugu actress pulls off some heavyweight moments with remarkable ease.

Kiran Abbavaram is impressive as an orphan. Compared to his previous roles, this character required a more restrained and settled performance, and the actor that neatly. The lyrics of the songs drive the film forward and are beautifully penned.

Minus Points:

The worst thing to have happened to the industry lately is key twists getting revealed well before a film’s release. Whether they are leaked with or without the filmmakers’ knowledge, they definitely kill the excitement, and the same is the case with Chennai Love Story. Since the shock element was already leaked, the interval block doesn’t land as intended.

The second half shifts into a lighter tone, with more focus on comedy, and this style of treatment may not appeal to everyone. There are some good moments, but on the whole, the theme may not strike a chord with everyone.

There are a few emotional moments between the key characters in the latter half, but they lack depth and end abruptly. One such instance is the cab scene, which triggers a serious conversation but isn’t explored properly. Without giving these crucial moments a proper closure, the film occasionally feels incomplete. The way the female lead’s mother behaves in a key situation comes across as clichéd writing.

Technical Aspects:

Mani Sharma came up with a very good soundtrack, and his music is one of the biggest assets of the film. Viswal Daniel neatly captures the seaside visuals with his camerawork. The editing could have been better.

Given the interval twist, the climax makes sense, and one can also see it coming from a long way off. Director Ravi Namburii chose a premise that is almost like walking on a sharp-edged knife, and he did a passable job handling it.

Verdict:

On the whole, Chennai Love Story is a decent romantic drama with a tricky subject. The first half has enough elements to appeal to one and all, backed by good music and captivating moments, but the lighter-toned second half and the proceedings in this hour may not work for everyone. Kiran Abbavaram and Sri Gouri Priya deliver very good performances, but the film’s overall result depends on how the audience receives the second half and the climax. If you are looking for something different in the romantic genre, you can give this one a try.
