Love today is the film that has caught the imagination of everyone in Tamil Nadu. It has become a huge hit and now, Dil Raju has released the film in Telugu. Let’s see how it is.

Story

Pradeep(Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikita(Ivana) are lovers who decide to take their relationship to the next level. They approach Nikita’s dad(Satyaraj) for the same. He puts a crazy condition and asks the couple to exchange their phones for a day and if they end up without any issues, he would say yes to their wedding. The couple okays the condition not knowing that this small step can change their life in a big way. What happens next in their lives is the whole story of the film.

Plus Points

The film is written, enacted and directed by Pradeep Ranganathan and he has done a superb job with the movie. His story is so unique and has been set up in the contemporary world effectively. The concept of having your girlfriend’s phone for a day itself sounds spooky and that too in this generation. This aspect has been showcased so well.

Pradeep plays the main lead and he is amazing in his role. The manner in which he showcases low confidence levels as a possessive boyfriend is enacted so well by the young actor. Ivana is also stunning in her role and gets a meaty part. She was just amazing in the emotional scenes of the film. The message showcased is quite relevant and how social media can be dangerous is shown well.

The first half is filled with hilarious comedy. The usage of whatsapp, new social apps and what kind of issues they can cause between the couple has been shown in a hilarious manner. Satyaraj is solid in his role. He gives a lot of depth to the film with his upbeat performance.

The drama and emotions in the second half are amazing. The last fifteen minutes related to the realization scenes between the couple have been showcased so well. Radhika as the hero’s mother is very good in a small role. Yogi Babu’s role looks silly but has a very good justification.

Minus Points

The film takes forever to enter the main plot as things are established on a very slow note in the initial first fifteen minutes. The couple gets into serious arguments after exchanging their phones. Hero bad-mouths the heroine so much but still she does not retaliate much. This aspect from the girl’s side should have been elevated quite nicely. The length of the film is also a tad slow and a few scenes in the first half should have been edited out.

Technical Aspects

Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is top notch. The climax number was amazing and so was the BGM. The Telugu dubbing is also good and the dialogues pack a punch. The camerawork is neat and the visuals create an impact. The production design is neat but the editing could have been better.

Coming to the director Pradeep, he should be lauded for thinking of a concept like this. The idea of having your partner’s phone is superb but is spooky for many who hide things in their relationships. This aspect has been elevated so well by the young director. With such a small point, the manner in which he holds the screens with huge comedy in the first and arresting drama in the second shows his prowess as a director. No wonder the film did so well in Tamil.

Verdict

On the whole Love Today is a hilarious comedy drama that will attract the youth big time. The film has superb comedy in the first half and sensible drama in the second. The usage of social media and their side effects have been showcased in a very impactful manner. Added bonus are the performances, backdrop and engaging narration that make this film a very good watch this weekend. Go for it.
