Constable Kanakam, an ETV Win series headlined by actress Varsha Bollamma, hit the digital screens a few months ago and received a decent response from the audience. The first season ended with the cliffhanger, “Where is Chandrika?”, and now the OTT platform has dropped the new season. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
After chasing the mystery behind the missing women in Adavi Gutta, Repalle, Kanaka Mahalakshmi a.k.a. Constable Kanakam (Varsha Bollamma) is appreciated by her seniors and colleagues who once treated her badly. However, Kanakam is still not happy as the suspense around her friend Chandrika’s (Megha Lekha) missing continues. What did Kanakam do to find details about her friend? What shocking truths did she uncover in the process? This forms the crux of the new season.
Plus Points:
The first season had its share of moments, but the narration wasn’t completely engaging. The investigation procedure didn’t quite hit the mark, which is actually the heart of a thriller show or movie. However, the makers have corrected these mistakes in the second season, making it a satisfactory watch.
This time, the team made sure there was no room for lag or slowdown in the proceedings, and the narrative keeps us hooked for the most part. The tension is evident in the investigation portions, and the twists work very well.
Season 2 takes a completely different turn with Chandrika’s backstory. The role gets more weightage and prominence in the plot, and Megha Lekha does a good job. Varsha Bollamma is effective once again, displaying conviction both as a cop and as someone who is deeply concerned about her friend.
However, more than Varsha Bollamma and Megha Lekha, the surprise package of Season 2 is Suchitraa Anandhan. Her role is nicely written and well performed, significantly enhancing the impact. Not just the thrills, but the second season delivers well on the emotional front too.
Minus Points:
If one expects an out-of-the-box concept from Constable Kanakam, they might be slightly disappointed. The core idea of Constable Kanakam isn’t new or groundbreaking, and the show relies more on narration and performances.
With a runtime of less than two hours, one gets a feeling that the season ends a tad too quickly. Srinivas Avasarala’s character doesn’t appear much in the second part, and we need to wait for a few more days to know what he is up to in the third season. Some moments could have been even more better.
Technical Aspects:
As we stated earlier, Constable Kanakam is among the well-made shows technically in the Telugu space, and the second season reaffirms it. Suresh Bobbili’s background score, Sriram Mukkapati’s cinematography, Vishnu Vardhan Pulla’s production design, and the slick editing come together well, offering a good viewing experience.
Director Prasanth Kumar Dimmala does a good job in the second season, showing noticeable improvement over the first chapter. The way he balances emotions along with twists is impressive.
Verdict:
On the whole, Constable Kanakam Season 2 is an upgrade over Season 1 with its twists and emotions. Varsha Bollamma and Megha Lekha are good in their roles, but Suchitraa Anandhan shines the most. While there’s nothing unconventional or experimental about the plot and the ending feels abrupt, Constable Kanakam Season 2 is still a decent watch for those who love watching crime thrillers.
