Yet another film named Butterfly opted for a direct digital release. Starring Anupama Parameswaran, Bhumika Chawla, and Nihal Kodhaty in the lead roles, the movie is currently streaming on Hotstar. Let’s see how the film is.

Story:

Geetha (Anupama Parameswaran), a Chartered Accountant, lives with her sister Vyjayanthi (Bhumika Chawla) in Hyderabad. Vyjayanthi, a prominent criminal lawyer, raises children by herself as she has issues with her husband. One day she leaves for Delhi for an important job and asks Geetha to take care of the kids. Suddenly the kids go missing causing a shock to Geetha. She takes the assistance of her boyfriend Viswa (Nihal Kodhaty) in the search. Where did the kids go? Were Geetha and Viswa successful in finding the kids? This forms part of the rest of the film.

Plus Points:

Anupama Parameswaran is the heart and soul of the film, who made the flick watchable. She carried the entire movie on her shoulders and did a phenomenal job as a tense woman about her sister’s kids. Her expressions were on point, and the way she acted during the climax scenes was applause-worthy. Her transformation during this particular episode is mesmerizing, and Anupama is almost seen in every frame of the film.

The mid portions get interesting when the children go missing, and a few subsequent scenes raise curiosity. The background score was very fine, enhancing the impact of a few sequences. The climax portions are good, with some intense scenes, and the small twists that come over the end are conceived nicely.

There is a good underlying message that the makers tried to communicate, which is about the challenges and atrocities faced by women. Although seen briefly, Bhumika’s character stresses this relevant point at the start, which makes sense.

Minus Points:

The biggest drawback is the film’s screenplay which lacks any punch or thrill. A bunch of films have come up regarding the children’s kidnapping concept in the past, and hence a bit of novelty was needed to make the movie exciting. But Butterfly is just one more regular thriller that offers nothing new.

After a few good moments, the film again slips down and gets stuck in a loop. The story doesn’t move forward, and there are many repeated scenes that bore the viewers. The film seems to beat around the bush, just adding to the length. Unfortunately, these monotonous sequences continue till the end, and the writing team did a substandard job.

It isn’t really difficult to guess who the kidnapper is, and hence more care was required in this segment. The character introductions are not done well, and a great artist like Rao Ramesh has hardly anything to do in the film. Bhumika’s role, too, gets restricted in the second hour. The songs were one more drawback that keep coming constantly.

Technical Aspects:

The production values were neat, and the makers spent what was required. The background score by Arviz & Gideon Katta was impressive, as mentioned earlier. The cinematography by Sameer Reddy was fair. However, the editing team should have reduced redundancy by chopping a few repeated scenes.

Coming to the director, Ghanta Satish Babu, he did a below-par job with the film. The screenplay is bland, and the film has many tedious moments. The narrative should have been filled with more exciting scenes, and the length could have been shorter so that the movie could have been better.

Verdict:

On the whole, Butterfly is a routine crime thriller that can be watched for Anupama Parameswaran’s performance alone. Apart from Anupama and a few good moments, there isn’t anything overwhelming about the film, and it ends up just an okay watch this weekend.
