Suriya is back with Veera Bhadrudu (Karuppu), a mass entertainer directed by RJ Balaji. Trisha plays the female lead. Amidst decent buzz, the movie hit the big screens today, and let’s see how it is.

Story:

An old man (Indrans), along with his daughter from Tamil Nadu, arrives in Hyderabad for a surgery. Soon after reaching the city, robbers steal their jewellery. Though the police manage to catch the thieves, they ask the duo to approach the court to reclaim the stolen valuables.

At the Nampally court, the father and daughter come across Baby Krishna (RJ Balaji), a corrupt lawyer who keeps troubling them instead of resolving the case. As the situation worsens, divine intervention happens to teach the dishonest lawyers a lesson.

Plus Points:

Veera Bhadrudu is the best presentation of Suriya in recent times. For Suriya fans who have been waiting to see his massy side, this film will offer loads of joy. RJ Balaji served enjoyable theatrical moments in both halves, and Suriya’s magical screen presence further elevates the impact of those sequences.

Suriya pulls off the divine role with magical aura and charm. Be it his look, body language, or the ferocious action avatar, Suriya nailed it all. The actor looked very energetic on screen and thoroughly enjoyed portraying Veera Bhadrudu. Suriya unleashed madness in the finale, exhibiting fury, and this block leaves a very good impact. The interval and climax episodes are a treat for the masses.

The fun moments in the second half work well as the protagonist casts his magical spell. Moments like the post-interval fun courtroom sequence involving RJ Balaji, Vijay’s Leo reference scene, and the territory episode featuring Trisha click nicely, boosting the entertainment quotient. RJ Balaji, Indrans, Natty, Trisha, and other supporting cast did a good job.

Minus Points:

If we look at the emotional core and the basic storyline, the film doesn’t offer anything new and reminds us of Shankar and Atlee films that revolve around corruption. However, RJ Balaji packs the narrative with entertaining theatrical moments, and one needs to look beyond certain logics to enjoy the film.

The beginning portions of the film are slow-paced, and Suriya’s entry could have happened a bit earlier. The major drawback is the dubbing for Suriya, as it doesn’t pack the desired punch. More care should have been taken with this crucial aspect.

Since the two key characters hail from Tamil Nadu, they converse in Tamil whenever no one is around them. While this adds authenticity, the excessive use of Tamil feels a bit overdone

Technical Aspects:

Sai Abyankkar’s background score works well at times, but the song mixing could have been much better, as the lyrics are not audible at times. Cinematographer GK Vishnu did a top-notch job, and the coloring by Red Chillies neatly reflects the film’s mood. The production values are good, while the editing is decent.

RJ Balaji picked up a familiar subject, but added an interesting element to it by introducing limitations to god’s power. Suriya was presented in a solid manner, though writing needed more precision.

Verdict:

On the whole, Veera Bhadrudu is an okayish action drama with a few good moments. Suriya is in top form, and there are some enjoyable episodes. However, the basic premise and emotional portions feel quite routine, which limits the overall impact. There are some dubbing issues, and the songs aren’t as good as the Tamil version. As a result, the film ends up being just an okay watch.
