Tamil hero Arun Vijay has made his digital debut with the SonyLiv web series Tamil Rockerz. Also, the prestigious production house AVM Productions ventured into the web space with this series. Let’s see how it is

Story:

A piracy website named Tamil Rockerz announces that they will be releasing Amazing Star Aditya’s 300-crore budget film Garuda a day before its theatrical release. Highly devastated by this Mathi (Azhagam Perumal) the producer of Garuda, seeks the help of the Police department to take action. ACP Rudra (Arun Vijay) who will be disturbed by his wife’s death is assigned the job of stopping the piracy gang. He will be given a special team that includes Sandhya (Vani Bhojan) a cyber forensic expert and Bhanu (Vinodhini) a cyber cell SI. Who is behind this piracy? Did Rudra and his team stop the gang from pirating Garuda film? This forms part of the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

MS Bhaskar who played a small cameo as the father of Vani Bhojan explains how all the stakeholders involved with a film suffer due to piracy. This particular scene questions the ethical values of the audience who watch films in an illegitimate way at the cost of thousands of people’s efforts. This strikes hard and makes us think.

A lot of research was done to showcase how these websites work. Arun Vijay has been very good with his performance and shoulders the series. Out of the two female leads, Vani Bhojan gets a role that travels with the story and she is fine in it.

Azhagam Perumal is terrific in his role as a film producer who will be distraught by piracy fear. Vinodhini is decent in her role. The show throws light on most of the aspects present in the film industry. The initial episodes are set well which draws our attention.

Minus Points:

The main point of the show got derailed due to the backstories of both protagonist and antagonist. It has turned into a revenge drama after a point in time. The personal life of Rudra with his wife could have been completely avoided as it doesn’t bring the emotional touch.

Iswarya Menon is wasted in a small role. After a promising start, the show falls flat. Crisp duration is needed for an investigative thriller to keep the audience engaged. Here the story is overstretched for no reason and makes us feel very lengthy. The series should have been wrapped in 6-7 episodes.

Though there are gripping moments in the show, they are few and far between. The climax is open-ended hinting at part 2 of the series which isn’t necessary at all. There are a lot of predictability factors involved in the show.

Technical Aspects:

Music by Vikas Badisa is good. The cinematography by Rajasekhar is neat. AVM Productions have spent huge on their debut series. The richness is visible throughout.

Editing could have been more sharper as the show is slow-paced in many portions and tests the patience. Coming to the director Arivazhagan he has chosen a good point but failed in making the proceedings interesting. He has filled some thrilling sequences here and there though.

Verdict:

On the whole, Tamil Rockerz has an exciting backdrop that is brought down by its predictability and revenge theme. Arun Vijay and other cast performances, interesting facts about the movie industry, and a few dialogues are its assets. The writing team should have concentrated more on the script. If you have more expectations going by its core point, you may be disappointed.
