Crazy Kalyanam is the latest outing from Anupama Parameswaran. The movie also stars Naresh, Tharun Bhascker, and Akhil Raj in key roles. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Keerthi (Anupama Parameswaran) is an MSc graduate who strives hard to secure a government job. Her father, Parvathaalu (Naresh), is frustrated with his life due to his drunkard son-in-law Balraj (Tharun Bhascker). Hence, he wants his younger daughter, Keerthi, to marry into a decent family. However, much to her parents’ surprise, Keerthi falls in love with Uday (Akhil Raj), a handloom weaver, disrupting their plans. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Senior actor Naresh Vijayakrishna is one such artist Tollywood can proudly boast of. Be it any emotion, the veteran actor nails it all. A subject like Crazy Kalyanam is his playground, and he goes all guns blazing. He tickles the funny bones with his comic timing, while he is spectacular in the emotional moments too.

The first half of Crazy Kalyanam is handled decently, with the comedy segments working well. Naresh’s efforts to get his daughter married into a respectable family evoke laughs.

Some moments involving Tharun Bhascker and the lead cast are entertaining too. Anupama Parameswaran delivers a good performance as a girl who works hard to be self-reliant. Tharun Bhascker, Akhil Raj, and others are fine in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

What could have been a good entertainer throughout is undermined by the second half, which feels both dragged and superficial. With the intention of delivering a rollercoaster ride, the director overstuffed the latter half, making it feel like he tried to pack in too many things at once.

Mainly, the marriage episode goes on and on for a significant amount of screen time without much impact. Multiple emotional subplots are included here, but they aren’t intertwined effectively, making the experience slightly exhausting.

Tharun Bhascker’s character, who is shown as irresponsible throughout the film, suddenly transforms towards the end, making the scenes feel artificial. Similarly, Naresh holding back his emotions as a result of the plot twist doesn’t click because of the issues in the writing. These scenes also come across as overly melodramatic.

Technical Aspects:

Suresh Bobbili’s music and background score are neat, while the cinematography by Shyam Dupati is good too. The editing team could have trimmed down some moments in the second half.

Production values are fair. Director Badrappa Gajula’s work clicks in parts. He handled the first half nicely, but the second half goes haywire, with the narrative losing its grip and focusing on too many things.

Verdict:

On the whole, Crazy Kalyanam is an okayish family drama with some good laughs. The first half is decently handled, with comedy taking centre stage, but the second half loses its steam once the marriage episode kicks in. The director tried to pack too many emotional moments all at once but couldn’t execute them effectively, ultimately making the film fall short of satisfactory levels.

Mareechika, starring Anupama Parameswaran, Regena Cassandrra, and Viraj Ashwin, has hit the big screens today. Let’s see how the film is.

Story:

Venkatalaxmi (Anupama Parameswaran), a college student, adores Sanju a.k.a. Sanjay (Viraj Ashwin) deeply. He is the son of a corporator, but chooses to stand on his own for self-respect and runs a coffee shop. Venkatalaxmi never confesses her feelings for Sanju, and she makes friends with NRI Mareechika (Regena Cassandrra). To Venkatalaxmi’s shock, Mareechika and Sanju get closer and eventually get married. One day, Mareechika kills Sanju, after which Venkatalaxmi approaches the police. Why did Mareechika kill Sanju? Who is she exactly? What happened next? This forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The director’s vision should be appreciated. He intended to deliver a different film without sticking to the routine beats. Mareechika, at the ideation stage, is on the lines of Mahesh Babu’s One: Nenokkadine. The film blends psychological, romantic, and mystery elements.

The interval block and the final act are engaging. Especially, the sequence during the last few minutes involving Ajay Ghosh, Regina, and Anupama came out pretty well. It generates laughs with Ajay Ghosh’s character getting confused (and so do the viewers). Performances by Regina, Anupama, and Viraj Ashwin are neat. Regena is apt as an NRI woman, while Anupama impresses in an innocent role. Viraj Ashwin looked dapper and played his part well.

Minus Points:

Lately, a common issue with most small-budget films is a good idea paired with underwhelming narration. Unfortunately, Maricheeka also falls into the same league. If the narration doesn’t support the intriguing idea, the whole purpose gets lost. The disappointment becomes greater when a film attempts something new but fails to live up to its potential.

The first half moves at a snail’s pace and also tests the viewers’ patience. The first hour is crucial to the latter half in terms of connecting the dots, but the execution could have been way better. The proceedings simply aren’t engaging.

The second half also starts on a dull note, but it gets better as the film reaches its fag end. In the process of untying the knots, the film creates a certain amount of confusion, but it eventually provides answers. The complicated narration, at times, isn’t the actual problem; rather, the police investigation related to the crime is poorly handled. The cops hardly put in any effort to find out what exactly happened, and this ultimately undoes the good idea the film contains.

Technical Aspects:

Music by Ilaiyaraaja is decent, while the background score works effectively in some crucial moments. Aravind Kannabiran’s cinematography is fine, and the production values are satisfactory. The editing could have been sharper.

Lakshmi Bhupala’s story is interesting, but it wasn’t translated compellingly onto the screen. Only a few moments work in this psychological thriller, while the rest of the portions feel bland.

Verdict:

On the whole, Mareechika is a disappointing psychological thriller that gets lost in translation. The story, with its psychological and mystery elements, had enough substance, but the treatment fails to pack a punch. Regina, Anupama, and Viraj Ashwin did well, but the sluggish narration, poorly handled investigation track, and the overall blandness in the proceedings make Mareechika a dull outing.

Anupama Parameswaran’s recent Tamil film Lockdown has made its OTT debut on Amazon Prime Video. Along with the original Tamil version, a Telugu dubbed version is also available. Here is our review of the film.

Story:

Set in 2020, Anitha (Anupama Parameswaran) is searching for a job and lives happily with her family. A friend promises to help her land a job and takes her to a party. Two months later, Anitha falls ill and discovers that she is pregnant. Shocked and with no one to turn to, she decides to secretly get rid of the unwanted pregnancy. Meanwhile, the COVID lockdown is imposed. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Anupama Parameswaran is a good actor. She can be bubbly and bold at times, and she can also pull off emotional characters effectively, which she has proven in many films. In this movie too, she convincingly portrays a girl who finds herself in a dilemma and chaos due to circumstances beyond her control. She fits well into the character and expresses the pain and helplessness effectively.

Minus Points:

The plot becomes predictable within the first few minutes, and such stories require engaging narration to keep the audience invested. Unfortunately, the drama required for the story, the family’s dilemma, and the emotional angles are barely explored.

The execution feels off because of unnecessary and repetitive scenes. At times, one wonders why certain scenes are stretched for so long when nothing significant is happening. These issues mainly arise from weak execution and ineffective screenplay.

Ironically, none of the supporting characters are utilised effectively except for the friend who supports Anupama’s character. Nirosha, Charle, and others do not get enough scope to showcase their performances. Once again, the writing team fails to create meaningful drama through these characters.

The climax contains a twist, but the way it is executed feels abrupt and ends without a proper conclusion. Additionally, the excessive use of songs becomes another hurdle for the film. Although the runtime is less than two hours, the movie still feels laggy due to the slow narration.

Technical Aspects:

Director AR Jeeva attempts to convey a message through the story, but the weak execution and underdeveloped storyline dilute its impact. Technically too, the film is not very impressive, and the production values appear below par. The Telugu dubbing could have been better.

Verdict:

On the whole, Lockdown is a disappointing drama. Except for Anupama Parameswaran’s passable performance, the film fails to impress in most aspects, making it a dull watch. With better execution and a tighter screenplay, the film could have turned out much better. As it stands, it is easily avoidable, and viewers are better off choosing other options for entertainment.
