Sree Vishnu has now come up with the film Comrade Kalyan. The movie stars Mahima Nambiar as the female lead. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) leases a theatre from his village head and runs it along with his friend. He falls for Odia girl Sitara (Mahima Nambiar), who once comes to his aid. While trying to win her heart, Kalyan unexpectedly becomes a part of a Naxalite gang, putting him in a do-or-die situation. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
If you think Comrade Kalyan focuses on serious themes and communism, you are mistaken. Comrade Kalyan is designed as a fun ride, with the film never slipping into a dull and boring zone.
The movie prioritizing entertainment over other elements is undoubtedly its biggest asset. There have been many Telugu films that have touched upon Naxalism, but Comrade Kalyan follows a lighter approach, making the subject accessible to a wider section of the audience.
The fun segments are present in both halves, and they keep the proceedings going. After a shaky start, the movie finds its footing with the heroine’s entry, and the impact is further enhanced by Satya’s character.
Sree Vishnu is once again in his element, but this time, his performance comes across as sincere rather than being reduced to that of an entertainer. His fun scenes with Satya form the film’s heart. Mahima Nambiar looks pretty and does well in her role, while Sudarshan, Radhika, Upendra Limaye, and Shine Tom Chacko do what is expected of them.
Minus Points:
The movie takes a dull start initially. The way the characters have been established isn’t effective, with some moments feeling out of place. Some jokes don’t land as intended in the beginning. There are some dubbing issues as well in this part.
Post-interval, the momentum dips in some portions. The song celebrating the heroics of Sree Vishnu could have been much better, as it comes at a crucial juncture. The ending isn’t convincing and needed better presentation.
Technical Aspects:
Vijay Bulganin’s music and background score are decent but could have been better. Sai Sriram’s cinematography is elegant, while the editing is fine for the most part.
Writers Bhanu Bhogavarapu and Nandu Savarigana haven’t attempted something out of the box, but the way they have shaped the script with an interesting conflict for the protagonist, laced with comedy, is neatly done. The fun moments appear more enjoyable on screen than in the promotional assets. Janakiram Marella’s execution is fair.
Verdict:
On the whole, Comrade Kalyan is a time-pass entertainer featuring a decent storyline. The fun segments keep the proceedings going, with the Sree Vishnu-Satya duo delivering some fine laughs. The beginning is shaky, the climax isn’t very effective, and the movie does slow down at times. Thankfully, the momentum doesn’t dip for long, with the comedy taking center stage and making this one a passable watch.
