Tharun Bhascker and Eesha Rebba starrer Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi released in theatres today. The film is the official Telugu remake of the 2022 Malayalam hit Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. Does it live up to the original? Let’s find out.

Story:

Kondaveeti Prashanti (Eesha Rebba) grows up with little control over her own choices. Her parents arrange her marriage to Ambati Omkar Naidu (Tharun Bhascker), a well-known fishery businessman from Dhawaleshwaram in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Prashanti adjusts to her husband’s lifestyle, only to gradually realise his true nature. What follows forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Tharun Bhascker steps into a new space as a lead actor and delivers a convincing performance. His Godavari accent works well and adds authenticity to the character.

Eesha Rebba portrays her role with restraint and seriousness, which suits the character. Her scenes with Tharun, especially the interval sequence, the following portions, and the climax, are effective.

Brahmaji, despite a limited role, manages to generate a few laughs. The supporting cast fits their respective parts. The cinematography gives the film a pleasant visual appeal.

Minus Points:

The story is familiar to many Telugu viewers, as the Malayalam original was widely watched after its OTT release. Hence, freshness in treatment becomes crucial for the remake. However, Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi follows the original almost scene by scene, with a very few changes. This limits the impact, particularly for those who have already seen the original.

While some comedy during the fight sequences works, the overall narration loses momentum in the second half. The film becomes slow and stretched, affecting engagement.

The supporting characters could have been explored better, especially in emotional moments. Brahmaji, in particular, is underutilised, missing an opportunity to add more humour.

Technical Aspects:

Director A.R. Sajeev makes his debut with this remake. While he stays faithful to the original, introducing more changes could have enhanced the Telugu version. Themes of patriarchy, domestic abuse, and male dominance could have been explored with greater depth.

Deepak Yaragera’s cinematography is effective, and Jay Krish’s music complements the film’s mood. The editing could have been tighter, especially in the second half. Production values are decent.

Verdict:

On the whole, Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi is a dark comedy that works in parts. Tharun Bhascker and Eesha Rebba deliver satisfactory performances, and a few comic moments click. However, the slow second half and lack of fresh elements restrict its appeal. Viewers who have not seen the original may find it passable, while others might feel underwhelmed.

Popular streaming platform Aha has now come up with the sequel to its web series “3 Roses.” The first volume of the second season is now available for streaming. Eesha Rebba, Raashi Singh, and Kushitha Kallapu played the lead roles. Let’s see how the series is.

Story:

Rithika alias Rithu (Eesha Rebba), Meghana (Raashi Singh), and Srasti (Kushita) live together. Meghana is divorced and hides this truth from her family. Srasti wants to meet and date new people. On the professional front, all three give it their all for their new ad agency. In this context, Prasad (Viva Harsha), who is familiar with Reethu, hands them a project.
What kind of problems do the trio face in completing the project? How do they overcome them? What is the truth they learn about Prasad? These questions form the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The way the lead characters are introduced is quite good. The backstories of the leads are sure to appeal to the audience. The trio’s mischief, their chemistry, and their efforts to keep the company afloat are entertaining.

Eesha Rebba and Raashi Singh delivered good performances. Satya takes care of the comedy department. On the other hand, Harsha Chemudu, a.k.a. Viva Harsha, impresses with his histrionics. As a fun-loving and immature girl, Kushita evokes decent laughs.

The dark comedy scenes click to an extent. Some fun scenes involving Prabhas Sreenu, in particular, are passable. The comedy generated against the party backdrop came out well. The twist revealed at the end of the four episodes is neatly presented and raises curiosity about the upcoming episodes.

Minus Points:

The new edition features characters from the first instalment, but they are not utilized well, which comes across as a disappointment. Reetu’s character had more scope, and the makers should have expanded her role. The same goes for Meghana’s character.

While most of the trio’s antics are entertaining, Srasti’s actions sometimes become irritating. Prabhas Sreenu’s track is handled well, but due to the nature of the comedy, it might not appeal to everyone.
Bringing Manu’s character for Reethu doesn’t quite hit the mark, as their scenes feel slightly dragged. His role should have been written in a better and more engaging manner. Even in the party episode, the inclusion of a few more funny elements would have helped the show leave a better impact. It also feels like the other artists were not utilized to their full potential.

Technical Aspects:

Director Kiran Karavalla did a decent job. The dark comedy scenes and Satya’s track are neatly handled. However, there are also aspects that leave a lot to be desired. Cinematography by Shakti Aravind is good, while the music by Ajay Arasad is fine. The editing needed some fine-tuning. Production values are good.

Verdict:

On the whole, the four-episode first volume of 3 Roses Season 2 works to an extent. Eesha Rebba, Raashi Singh, and Kushita Kallapu are good in their roles. Satya and Harsha entertain with their comedy. However, dragged scenes, underutilization of a few actors, and some irritating moments are the key drawbacks. Those who like comedy entertainers can give this series a try, but it is advised to watch it without high expectations.
