Actor Sumanth’s latest film, Newton’s 3rd Law, hits theatres today. Directed by debutant Rajesh Karna, the crime thriller also stars Jagapathi Babu and Srinivas Avasarala in pivotal roles. Here’s our review to find out how it fares.

Story:

Set in 1999 in Hyderabad, Vasu Dev (Sumanth) begins investigating the death of a youngster named Vinay (Trinadh Varma). He soon discovers that it was no accident, but a murder. As the investigation progresses, Vasu uncovers a connection between the deceased and Stephen Mercury (Jagapathi Babu), a ruthless criminal and smuggler. How is a college student connected to the underworld? Who killed Vinay? And what circumstances led to the murder? The answers unfold in the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

The core idea of Newton’s 3rd Law is built around the philosophy that every action has an equal and opposite reaction – a concept that also mirrors the belief in karma. Building a crime investigation thriller around this premise is an interesting choice, and the team deserves appreciation for attempting something concept-driven.

Sumanth fits the role of a serious investigator well and delivers a convincing performance. His character arc is neatly written and contains a subtle twist that works in the film’s favour. While he anchors the narrative, Trinadh Varma, whose character drives the entire story, leaves a good impression with his sincere performance. Given the right opportunities, the young actor has the potential to emerge as a dependable performer.

Shelley N. Kumar is equally impressive as Vinay’s mother. She delivers a natural performance, expressing both grief and restraint with ease. Ravi Varma, Jagapathi Babu and Srinivas Avasarala perform their respective roles effectively despite being confined to limited character arcs.

The opening portions and the climax are among the film’s biggest strengths. Rajesh Karna executes both sequences neatly, ensuring they leave a positive impression.

Minus Points:

A compelling story alone isn’t enough to make an engaging thriller. Even a slow-burn narrative works when the screenplay consistently builds intrigue. Unfortunately, that’s where Newton’s 3rd Law falters. While the premise has genuine potential, the screenplay lacks the grip needed to keep audiences invested.

The investigation often feels stuck in a loop, repeatedly covering familiar ground instead of pushing the narrative forward. As a result, the first hour feels stretched, with the story unfolding in fragments rather than gathering momentum. Frequent flashbacks further interrupt the flow, making the narrative feel repetitive. The second half doesn’t improve matters either. It is weighed down by lengthy conversations that revisit the same points without adding much to the drama.

The supporting characters, too, could have been written with greater depth. Jagapathi Babu gets very little scope to showcase his calibre, and the same applies to Srinivas Avasarala. Though both actors perform well within their limitations, their characters lack the dramatic weight needed to leave a stronger impact. Neha Pathan is okay, but her role also misses the opportunity to surprise.

Although the climax neatly ties together the loose ends and is executed well, the film has already lost much of its momentum by then. Had the narrative been tighter in the initial portions, the overall impact would have been far more effective.

Technical Aspects:

For a debutant, Rajesh Karna deserves appreciation for choosing an interesting concept with good potential. However, the execution falls short of doing complete justice to the idea. A tighter screenplay and sharper narration could have elevated the film into a far more engaging investigative thriller.

Technically, the film is supported by decent cinematography and a neat background score, both of which complement the mood of the narrative. The editing, however, is one of the major drawbacks, as several scenes could have been trimmed to deliver a crisper viewing experience. The production values are adequate.

Verdict:

On the whole, Newton’s 3rd Law has an interesting premise but ends up as a disappointing investigative thriller due to its sluggish screenplay and uneven execution. Sumanth delivers a convincing performance, while Trinadh Varma and Shelley N. Kumar leave a positive impression with their performances. However, the repetitive narration and excessive lags make it difficult to stay invested. With a tighter screenplay and sharper pacing, the film could have delivered a far more compelling experience. As it stands, this turns out to be a tough watch even for fans of investigative thrillers.

Jagapathi Babu and Laya’s new film Vadala hit the big screens today. Let’s see the movie is.

Story:

Siddharth (Jagapathi Babu), a doctor by profession, leads a happy life with his wife Priya (Laya) and their children in Madhya Pradesh. Due to an accident, Siddharth comes across a woman named Aamudha (Hrithika Srinivas). From that moment, Siddharth’s life changes in unexpected ways. The rest of the story is about what Aamudha did and who she actually is.

Plus Points:

Actress Hrithika Srinivas springs a pleasant surprise with Vadala. As a psychologically disturbed woman, she delivers a very good performance. The actress nicely balances both the glamour and performance aspects.

Jagapathi Babu is one of those actors who rarely goes wrong. Even in Vadala, he does a very good job as a doctor who is deeply connected to his family. Laya is equally good. Though her role appears normal initially, the way she tries to safeguard her husband towards the end is very neat. Ravi Varma and the rest of the supporting cast do what is expected of them.

Minus Points:

Vadala will connect only with those who think from the director’s perspective and not with the general audience. The scenes between Jagapathi Babu and Hrithika Srinivas fail to establish the love and lust elements convincingly within such a short span, making them unappealing to the viewer. From a storytelling perspective, the film has several disappointing aspects.

Initially, the movie excites on the lines of Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja, but as it moves forward, the narrative becomes highly routine, boring, and predictable. One wonders why there was a song featuring Jagapathi Babu and Hrithika Srinivas while trying to establish the director’s point.

There are many films that seem totally different until their key twists are revealed. But the problem here lies in the screenplay, as the subject explored is sensitive.

The romantic track between Jagapathi Babu and Laya goes overboard. Though Hrithika’s character completely tortures the protagonist’s family, them forgetting everything towards the end is illogical.

Technical Aspects:

The production values are decent. Karthik B. Kodakandla has provided good songs, and Chota K. Naidu’s cinematography is neat. Akella B. Krishna’s direction is disappointing. The emotional aspect of the film isn’t presented effectively.

Verdict:

On the whole, Vadala ends up being a boring psychological thriller. Despite the core point holding potential, the narrative remains unexciting for the most part. Hrithika Srinivas, Jagapathi Babu, and Laya do well, but the poor execution makes it a disappointing watch. You can skip it.

Anushka Shetty starrer Ghaati hit the big screens today amidst decent buzz. Krish Jagarlamudi is the director of this movie. Check out our review to know how it fares.

Story:

Set on the Andhra-Odisha border (AOB), the Eastern Ghats serve as the hub for cultivating ganja and exporting it. The Ghaatis work as transporters under Kaastala Naidu (Ravindra Vijay), with Sheelavathi (Anushka Shetty) and Desi Raju (Vikram Prabhu) also involved in the operations. However, they branch out to start their own business and approach the bigwigs directly, which Naidu cannot tolerate. In retaliation, his gang destroys their livelihoods, causing a personal loss to Sheelavathi. Pushed to the edge, she rises against them, and her path of revenge forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Anushka Shetty once again dons a fierce role and commands attention in several moments. Her screen presence is striking, and she excels in the action sequences, where her aggression feels convincing.

Vikram Prabhu, making his Tollywood debut, delivers a watchable performance. His screen time is limited, but he makes it count, and his scenes with Anushka come out well.

Jagapathi Babu brings lightness to the proceedings with his brief comic touches, while Chaitanya Rao makes the most of a neatly written role. The supporting cast performs adequately.

Minus Points:

Although the film has all the ingredients – action, love, and revenge – it lacks a gripping storyline to hold them together. The screenplay is flat and predictable, making the proceedings unengaging.

The film misses emotional depth, especially in the second half, which had scope for a powerful payoff but falters due to weak and uneven writing. Character progressions feel abrupt and unnatural, leaving several arcs underdeveloped.

Even central roles like Anushka’s and Ravindra Vijay’s deserved stronger writing. The characters are set up with potential but never receive the depth or elevation needed to drive the narrative forward.

Technical Aspects:

Chintakindi Srinivas Rao’s writing lacks weight, and Krish’s direction follows the same path without adding spark. Sai Madhav Burra’s dialogues click occasionally but fail to elevate the unimpressive narrative.

The visuals of the Ghats are captured attractively, yet the editing lacks sharpness, making the film feel longer than it is. Vidya Sagar’s songs falls flat, though his background score provides some relief in crucial moments.

Verdict:

On the whole, Ghaati is a revenge drama that works in parts. Anushka Shetty brings intensity to her role, and Vikram Prabhu makes a respectable debut, but the film suffers from weak writing and dull execution. A few characters could have been better developed. You can watch this film if you wish, but keeping expectations low is advisable.
