Jana Nayagan was all set to release during the Sankranthi 2026 season as Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film before he dedicated himself to politics. But things took a different turn. Delayed once, twice, thrice… and then again, the film kept getting pushed further. By the time it was finally ready, actor Vijay had become Chief Minister Vijay. Then came another shock – the entire film was leaked online in high quality. After overcoming countless hurdles, most notably its prolonged CBFC certification issues, Jana Nayagan has finally hit screens across the globe today, with the buzz at an all-time high. Let’s find out if this ‘one last time’ movie lived up to the expectations it raised.

Story:

Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (TVK) walks out of jail after serving his sentence and promises Jailer Srikanth (Gautham Vasudev Menon) that he will turn Vijji (Mamitha Baiju) into an Army officer. As he tries to transform the reluctant youngster, India comes under threat from Amrish Poojari, alias John Himler (Bobby Deol), who is plotting a deadly mission called Project MM against the nation. Whether Vijji fulfills TVK’s dream and whether John Himler succeeds in his mission form the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

The biggest attraction of Jana Nayakudu is that it marks Thalapathy Vijay’s final film. The makers use this factor effectively by packing the film with several crowd-pleasing episodes that celebrate the star’s larger-than-life image.

The jail introduction, the interval sequence, and the emotionally charged Madurai episode, followed by a powerful action stretch, are among the film’s major highlights. These sequences generate good theatrical moments and are sure to delight hardcore Vijay’s fans.

The emotional thread works in parts, particularly during the opening portions of the second half. The scene in which Vijay speaks about women’s safety is presented with sincerity and is likely to resonate with a section of the audience.

Vijay is completely at ease in a role tailor-made for him. His screen presence, signature mannerisms, and effortless style keep the film watchable even when the screenplay loses momentum. Thalapathy Kacheri once again showcases his dancing ability.

Mamitha Baiju delivers a neat performance and shares a comfortable on-screen equation with Vijay. Prakash Raj leaves a mark despite limited screen time. Bobby Deol does a decent job as the antagonist, even though the writing of his character is familiar. The supporting cast performs its part satisfactorily.

Minus Points:

The film’s biggest drawback is its striking resemblance to Bhagavanth Kesari. Director H. Vinoth has made only a few noticeable changes, mainly to the antagonist’s track, portions of the backstory, and the climax involving advanced technology. Apart from these additions, the screenplay largely follows a familiar path, with several moments rewritten to suit Vijay’s image. However, these changes fail to make the film feel fresh.

Although the second half begins on a promising note, it gradually loses momentum and turns into a dull affair. The emotional portions hold the narrative together only for a while before the screenplay becomes repetitive and uninspiring. The climax, in particular, suffers from poor execution, predictable twists, and disappointing visual effects, preventing the film from ending on a satisfying note.

The writing also demands that the audience overlook several logical inconsistencies. These moments may not even work for hardcore Vijay fans.

Pooja Hegde, Priyamani, Revathi, Sunil, Nassar, and several other notable actors receive limited scope and are left without meaningful character arcs. The lengthy runtime further affects the film. Bobby Deol’s mission itself feels outdated, and certain narrative choices, such as the ease with which confidential Army information becomes accessible, further weaken the overall impact.

Technical Aspects:

H. Vinoth fails to give Vijay a memorable farewell. His heavy reliance on the Bhagavanth Kesari template limits the film’s originality. A fresher narrative approach and a stronger climax could have made a significant difference.

Anirudh Ravichander delivers a satisfactory background score that elevates several commercial episodes, although the soundtrack as a whole is not among his finest works. Sathyan Sooryan’s cinematography complements the film’s tone nicely.

Pradeep E. Raghav’s editing is adequate, and trimming some repetitive stretches in the latter half would have resulted in a tighter narrative. The production values remain decent, but the visual effects, especially in the climax, are disappointing.

Verdict:

On the whole, Jana Nayakudu (Jana Nayagan) turns out to be a routine commercial entertainer that fails to leave a lasting impact. While Thalapathy Vijay’s screen presence and a few action episodes work in the film’s favour, they are overshadowed by the familiar storyline, repetitive second half, weak writing, and underwhelming climax. Vijay’s fans may still find a few moments to enjoy, but for others, this ends up as a below-par farewell outing that could have been much better.

Varun Dhawan’s latest rom-com entertainer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, also starring Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, has hit the big screens. David Dhawan is the director. Let’s see how the film is.

Story:

Jaswinder Ahuja, aka Jass Ahuja (Varun Dhawan), is a wedding photographer who falls in love with Baani (Mrunal Thakur) while working at a wedding. Baani too falls in love with him, and they get married in a cinematic fashion. However, five years after their marriage, Baani applies for divorce because Jass Ahuja wants to have kids, but she refuses, citing her professional career and responsibilities. Later, Jass Ahuja moves to London, where he starts dating Preet (Pooja Hegde). To Jass Ahuja’s shock, Baani re-enters his life, leading to chaos and fun.

Plus Points:

The second half is filled with decent entertainment. After the interval twist, the narrative picks up steam as the protagonist juggles between two women. Varun Dhawan’s antics to keep the truth hidden from the female leads generate good laughs.

The hospital sequences in the second half, involving Rakesh Bedi and Chunky Panday, along with the house sequence featuring Maniesh Paul, have come out well. Varun Dhawan delivers an entertaining performance and looks energetic on screen throughout. The fun dialogues are neatly written. For example, the one referring to Shah Rukh Khan from Jawan elicits smiles.

Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde’s roles are largely meant for glamour, and both do well in their respective parts. The film’s runtime is crisp, and there are no significant dull stretches.

Minus Points:

While the jokes and entertainment largely work in the latter half, the film’s impact and the hero’s character are undermined by the climax. It portrays the male protagonist as someone desperate for women, whereas the proceedings until that point suggest otherwise. Jass Ahuja enters into another relationship only because his wife divorces him, and not out of any bad intentions.

Very few jokes work in the first half, while most of them fail to land as intended, making this portion below par. In particular, the love track in the opening half hour is quite ordinary.

Rom-coms generally need good music to elevate the overall experience, but Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai falls short in this aspect, with only one song (the remix) making an impression. There was good scope for emotions in the climax, but the film fails to capitalize on it.

Technical Aspects:

The music isn’t great, and with better songs, the film would have been more captivating. Raju Singh’s background score is decent. Ayananka Bose’s camera work is vibrant, while the editing and production values are satisfactory.

David Dhawan’s direction is a mixed bag. While the first half isn’t very effective, the second half offers some good humor. However, the impact is taken away by the climax and the cameo that follows it.

Verdict:

On the whole, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is a romantic comedy that works in parts with a better second half. Varun Dhawan’s entertaining performance, the presence of Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, and some good humor in the latter half are the film’s strengths. However, a below-par first half, the lack of good music, and the climax weaken the overall impact.
