Mookuthi Amman 2 (Mahasakthi), the spiritual sequel to Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman has now arrived in theatres. While RJ Balaji directed the first film, the second installment is helmed by Sundar C. Let’s see how the movie is.
Story :
Sakthi (Nayanthara) is a cop who lives with her adopted mother, Balamma (Urvashi). Sakthi keeps getting bizarre dreams in which a few people constantly ask her to visit Mylanchi. She keeps wondering why she is having these nightmares. This is when an opportunity knocks on her door, with Sakthi opting for a voluntary transfer to Mylanchi. Little does she know that the evil force Bhairi (Regena Cassandrra) is waiting for her there. The rest of the movie is all about the battle between Sakthi and Bhairi.
Plus Points :
Initially, the movie draws attention with moments revolving around the protagonist’s bizarre dreams. The incarnation theme involving a village deity is an interesting idea on paper.
Nayanthara is fine as Sakthi, but there isn’t much scope for her to stand out. A couple of elevations work decently. Regena Cassandrra does well as the antagonist and gets meaty screen time.
Minus Points :
The makers boasted that Mookuthi Amman 2 was made on a whopping three-digit budget, but the visuals are a far cry from their claims. The VFX work is terrible, to say the least, leaving an eyesore. The problem is that the movie is filled with cheap CGI throughout, making it difficult to look past the shoddy visuals.
Also, AI has been used considerably, and the forest sequences seem artificial throughout. Even if we keep the visual effects aside, the narrative remains largely boring and dull. The screenplay choices are heavily outdated.
The second half is completely unbearable. The war sequences in this hour are poorly executed. The interesting theme is also reduced to a routine fare towards the end. The cameos of veteran actresses don’t work either.
To make matters worse, there is an irritating and lengthy comedy sequence featuring Yogi Babu in the second half. The background score is unnecessarily loud. Duniya Vijay, Sunil, and Ramachandra Raju are wasted in their roles.
Technical Aspects :
Hiphop Tamizha’s songs and background score are weak, and the cinematography by Gopi Amarnath isn’t any better. Even with a runtime of under two and a half hours, the movie feels excessively long, leaving a lot to be desired in terms of editing.
The screenplay by Venkatt Raghavan is unexciting, and the direction by Sundar C is ineffective. Sundar C’s films usually offer decent entertainment even with clichés, but that is also missing here.
Verdict :
On the whole, Mahasakthi is an outdated and boring devotional fantasy drama that suffers from poor execution despite an interesting theme. The sloppy visuals, horrendous VFX, and unbearable second half make it an extremely poor fare. You can skip this film.
