The biggest Indian film, Ramayana, headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, has hit the big screens today amid huge hype. The mythological action drama is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Let’s see if the film lives up to the hype.

Story:

As everyone knows, Ramayana is a tale of Good vs Evil. The film begins by depicting Ravana’s (Yash) childhood and how he goes about acquiring Lanka from Kubera and obtaining a boon from Brahma. Later, Ravana even defeats Lord Indra (Kunal Kapoor). This is when Indra prays to Lord Vishnu, who then takes birth in human form as Lord Ram (Ranbir Kapoor), setting the stage for an epic battle.

Plus Points:

One of the biggest challenges for any filmmaker is narrating a story that has been deeply rooted in our lives for centuries. Making a movie on Ramayana is like walking on a double-edged sword, but Nitesh Tiwari showcases his mastery by handling the subject so impressively that the film could serve as a reference point for other filmmakers.

Huge shoutout to Namit Malhotra for backing a project of this scale without any limitations. Bringing an epic like Ramayana to life in its full glory required immense courage, and Namit deserves every ounce of respect for making this happen. He has instilled confidence in filmmakers to dream big without any boundaries.

Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama is the heartbeat of Ramayana. While he is excellent in the action sequences, his portrayal will tug at our heartstrings in the emotional segments. Ranbir Kapoor is one of the best talents in the country, if not the best. Initially, eyebrows were raised over his casting, but he is the mainstay of Ramayana. He exudes a divine aura and brings the character to life with utmost perfection.

The film’s impact increased manifold with Rocking Star Yash playing Ravana and brownie points to the casting team. Whenever Yash appears, he commands the marquee, bringing out the ferociousness of the character in full-blown manner. His swag, aura, monstrous screen presence, and scintillating performance will go down in the history books.

Sai Pallavi as Sita exhibits serenity and calmness, making her portrayal instantly likeable. There was also criticism surrounding her casting initially, but she has nailed the character. Ravie Dubey as Lakshman is fantastic and he got to entertain with some humor. Rakul Preet Singh is impactful as Shurpanaka.

The money-shot sequences are unlimited in number. The Indra-Ravana fight sequence, the Jatayu vs. Ravana action block, and the tornado sequence are worth the ticket price. The placement of Darthi Hai Ambar Hai is clap worthy.

Not just a spectacle, the movie is rich in soul too, which makes the experience truly fulfilling. The pre-Vanavaas sequence and the scenes showcasing Jatayu’s pain and death will hit us hard. Not many movies based on the epic have explored Ravana’s backstory, and hence, Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana also brings a sense of freshness.

Minus Points:

There aren’t many complaints about the film. The pace dips slightly in the post-interval portion, particularly during the sequence where Ravan battles Vidyutjihva. This block could have been shortened a bit.

A sound-mixing issue is noticeable in a couple of scenes, with a few dialogues not being clearly audible. The Jai Jai Ram song plays in the background, but the experience could have been better if the full version had been included.

Technical Aspects:

Ramayana is spectacular on the technical front. AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer’s score elevates the proceedings to a whole new level. The songs are fairly good too. The production design is fabulous, creating a world that presents the epic in breathtaking manner.

Pankaj Kumar and Mahesh Limaye’s cinematography is magnificent. The editing is satisfactory for the most part. The sound-mixing issues should have been taken care of in a couple of scenes.

Academy Award-winning DNEG shows why it is the best in the business. With several VFX-heavy sequences, DNEG pushes the envelope further, setting a new benchmark for Indian cinema. The intricate detailing of creatures is mind-blowing. The 3D version delivers big time, with exquisite visual effects.

Ramayana is what it is because of Nitesh Tiwari. You will be pleasantly surprised by the way Nitesh pulled off breathtaking mass moments in this epic. When it comes to emotions, which is basically his strong zone, the filmmaker hit all the right notes. There have been numerous versions and interpretations of Ramayana, which always keeps the expectation bar sky-high, and Nitesh Tiwari still reaches them comfortably.

Verdict:

On the whole, Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana is a faithful and compelling adaptation of the mythological epic. It is amazing in scale and visuals while also being rich in soul. The VFX work in crucial sequences sets a new benchmark for Indian cinema. Nitesh Tiwari ensures that the spectacle doesn’t overshadow the drama and emotions, making it a wholesome experience. Ranbir Kapoor is exceptional as Rama, Sai Pallavi is impressive as Sita, and Yash sets the screen on fire as Ravan. The pacing is slow in certain sequences, and there are minor sound-mixing issues. The presence of the full version of Jai Jai Ram could have further enriched the experience. Despite these shortcomings, the movie delivers a memorable theatrical experience and is worth watching on the biggest screen possible. The 3D version is recommended over the 2D version for a more immersive experience.

Thandel, the much-anticipated Telugu film starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, has finally arrived on the big screens worldwide. With soaring expectations, does this emotional saga deliver an unforgettable experience? Dive into our review to find out!

Story:

Raju (Naga Chaitanya), a fearless fisherman from Srikakulam, shares a deep and unbreakable bond with Satya (Sai Pallavi). Their love is pure and unwavering, but their lives take a dramatic turn when Raju is honored with the title of Thandel (Leader) among his people. Concerned for his safety, Satya urges him to give up fishing forever. Despite her warnings, Raju sets out to sea, unknowingly drifting into Pakistani waters. This unfortunate mistake lands him and his crew in a Pakistani jail, turning their lives upside down. Will Raju and his men find a way back home? Can love withstand the test of distance, struggle, and uncertainty? The answers unfold in Thandel, a gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and resilience.

Plus Points:

Thandel beautifully proves that a simple love story, when told with strong emotions, can leave a lasting impact. The film seamlessly blends love, longing, sadness, and patriotism, making it an engaging watch.

After a long time, Naga Chaitanya delivers a performance that truly stands out. His transformation into the character is remarkable, and his effortless mastery of the Srikakulam accent adds authenticity, making it a delightful aspect of the film.

Sai Pallavi, as expected, shines yet again. Her expressive performance adds depth to the narrative, making her love and emotions for Raju feel incredibly real. The chemistry between Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi is one of the film’s biggest strengths, bringing a unique charm to their romance.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music is a revelation. For those who doubted his recent work, Thandel serves as a reminder of his brilliance. His compositions breathe life into the film, elevating key moments with soul-stirring tracks. The songs are not just well-composed but also perfectly placed, enhancing the emotional depth of the narrative.

Minus Points:

While Thandel tells a heartfelt love story, certain sequences feel repetitive, causing slight disconnects in the narrative. A bit more variation in the screenplay could have made the journey even more immersive.

The Pakistan jail portions, though impactful, could have been executed with greater intensity. While the intent is strong, some moments lack the punch needed to evoke powerful patriotic emotions. A stronger infusion of stirring dialogues could have amplified the impact, leaving audiences with a lasting impression.

Although the runtime is reasonable, a few scenes tend to drag, slightly affecting the film’s pacing. A tighter edit would have ensured a more gripping experience.

Technical Aspects:

Director Chandoo Mondeti deserves appreciation for crafting an emotionally resonant love story. He sensitively captures pain, longing, and patriotism, making the emotional beats land effectively. However, a bit more finesse in writing and execution could have enhanced certain scenes.

Devi Sri Prasad’s background score plays a crucial role in uplifting the film, making every emotional moment even more powerful. Shamdat Sainudeen’s cinematography is another major highlight, offering breathtaking visuals that enrich the storytelling.

The dialogues are well-written, with a few standing out memorably. Naveen Nooli’s editing is decent, but a few trims here and there would have helped maintain a tighter grip on the narrative. Production values are commendable, adding to the film’s overall appeal.

Verdict:

On the whole, Thandel is a deeply emotional love story interwoven with patriotic elements. Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi deliver stellar performances, their chemistry serving as the film’s soul. Devi Sri Prasad’s music elevates the experience, making the emotional moments even more impactful. Though the film has minor drawbacks, such as occasional repetition and a few underwhelming moments in the jail sequences, its strong emotions and heartfelt storytelling make it worth watching. If you enjoy love stories with depth, Thandel is a film that will touch your heart.
