Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived amid tremendous buzz, with expectations riding high on Tom Holland’s latest outing as the beloved web-slinger. Does it live up to the hype? Let’s find out.
Story:
Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man (Tom Holland) begins noticing unusual changes in his physical abilities and struggles to make sense of them. Meanwhile, the Department of Damage Control (DDC) comes under attack as an invisible telepath searches for V-MAX. Who is the mysterious attacker? What exactly is V-MAX? How Spider-Man deals with the growing threat forms the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
A Spider-Man film is expected to deliver exhilarating superhero moments, and Brand New Day succeeds in that aspect for the most part. The opening stretches establish the conflict effectively before paving the way for a series of well-crafted action blocks.
The action is undoubtedly the film’s biggest asset. Whether it’s Spider-Man’s explosive showdown with Hulk or the stylish combat against The Hand, the sequences are choreographed with flair and executed on a grand scale. These moments consistently keep the entertainment quotient intact.
The emotional thread works only intermittently but still offers a few engaging moments. Spider-Man’s confrontations with the grey-shaded antagonist Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) generate some intrigue, while his interactions with MJ (Zendaya) lend the narrative a touch of warmth.
Tom Holland once again delivers a committed performance, balancing humour, vulnerability, and action with ease. Zendaya is decent despite her limited screen time, while Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo are effective in their respective roles.
Minus Points:
The biggest drawback is the screenplay, which is built around a rather thin premise. Beyond its action set pieces, the narrative offers very few surprises and remains largely predictable.
Although the revenge angle has the potential to create an emotional impact, the writing never develops it convincingly. As a result, the central conflict fails to resonate as strongly as intended. Despite being central to the conflict, Sadie Sink delivers a fairly ordinary performance, making Jean Grey less impactful than intended.
The screenplay also leaves several questions unanswered. The DDC’s pursuit of the telepathic character isn’t explored convincingly, while Hulk’s subplot lacks a satisfying payoff. Similarly, Punisher and the new Black Widow appear more as additions to expand the universe than as characters who significantly influence the narrative.
Jacob Batalon performs adequately as Ned, but the character is given little scope to make an emotional impact. While the second half handles him slightly better than the first, the emotional payoff remains underwhelming.
Technical Aspects:
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously impressed with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, delivers a film that excels in spectacle but falls short in storytelling. While the action is mounted effectively, the screenplay lacks the emotional depth required to make the narrative truly compelling.
Brett Pawlak’s cinematography is one of the film’s strongest technical aspects, capturing the action with style and clarity. The visual effects are polished and blend seamlessly into the narrative, although the editing could have been sharper during the slower stretches.
The action choreography by Peng Zhang and the Jackie Chan Stunt Team deserves special appreciation for consistently delivering exciting set pieces. Michael Giacchino’s background score complements the proceedings but doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
Verdict:
On the whole, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a decent superhero entertainer that leans heavily on its action. Tom Holland anchors the film with another assured performance, and the action sequences provide enough thrills to keep audiences engaged. However, a predictable screenplay, an underdeveloped central conflict, and the underutilisation of supporting characters prevent it from reaching the heights of the franchise’s stronger entries. Spider-Man fans are likely to enjoy the ride, while others may find it a passable one-time watch driven primarily by its action spectacle.
