A week after Vishnu Vinyasam, Sree Vishnu has now come up with a crime thriller titled Mrithyunjay. We have been to the exclusive premiere of Mrithyunjay, and here’s our review about the film.
Story:
Jay a.k.a. Mrithyunjay (Sree Vishnu) works at Swecha Newspaper, and his job is to secure obituary ads for the company. Jay excels in his role, but his goal is to earn a place in the Crime Bureau department. However, he is denied the position citing a lack of experience and skills. One day, while Jay is on the job to get an obituary ad, he notices something unusual about a death. He begins looking for answers, and his investigation eventually leads him to a formidable force.
Plus Points:
Sree Vishnu has lately been mostly doing comedy dramas and entertaining audiences with his trademark dialogue delivery and comedy timing. But his talent isn’t just limited to comedy. He is a very good performer too, and Mrithyunjay showcases the other side of him.
It is refreshing to see Sree Vishnu take a departure from his usual comedies and attempt a serious subject backed by neat emotion. The reason that pushes him to investigate a person’s death is convincing, and this makes the film feel honest.
For any film to work, there must be a threatening force for the protagonist. Mrithyunjay gets this aspect absolutely right. The villain role played by Veer Aaryan is both well-written and well-performed. He is shown to be just as smart as the hero, and the intellectual battle between the two in the second half keeps us hooked.
Reba Monica John played a key role, and she did a very good job as a cop. Her action moves towards the end are stylish, and she lends solid support. Another good thing about the film is that it doesn’t have any unnecessary subtracks or romantic angle, keeping the narrative completely focused.
Minus Points:
Though Mrithyunjay is an honest attempt, it falls short of going to the next level because of a few flaws, the main issue being the initial portions. The way the plot is set up and the protagonist’s world and character are introduced isn’t very appealing. Most parts of the first half are below par, and the movie starts to gain momentum only from the pre-interval point.
There are pacing issues in the first hour. The scenes featuring Sree Vishnu and his friends could have been executed better. The concept the film deals with isn’t particularly out of the box, and those expecting a very unique plot might end up slightly disappointed.
Technical Aspects:
Kaala Bhairava’s powerful background score does a world of good to Mrithyunjay. His music keeps us engaged during the tense moments. Vidya Sagar’s cinematography is solid, and the interval and climax sequences are well shot. The production values are good.
The editing is okay. Director Shri Hussain Sha Kiran shows a lot of promise with this flick. The way he handled the cat-and-mouse game between the hero and the villain is neatly done, proving that he is a talent to watch out for. However, the first half isn’t up to the mark, and had certain flaws been corrected, the movie would have been more impactful.
Verdict:
On the whole, Mrithyunjay is a decent crime thriller with a simple plot. It’s nice to see Sree Vishnu in a different genre, and he performs pretty well. Reba Monica John and Veer Aaryan are very good in their respective roles. The second-half portions, where the hero and villain try to outsmart each other, are decently engaging, but the first-half is below par, which diminishes the overall impact. If you like watching crime thrillers, you can give this film a try for its honesty.
