Cult is the latest outing from Vishwak Sen, which he himself directed. Touted to be India’s first-ever slasher film, Cult hit the big screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Elvin (Tarak Ponnappa), the son of Goa’s Home Minister, throws a grand birthday party, inviting all the big shots from across the country. What initially begins as a celebratory event soon turns into a dangerous game involving a killing spree. The venue is rigged with explosives, leaving the police with no scope to rescue the guests. DSP Sankalp Nayak (Vishwak Sen), who is also inside the party, rises to the occasion to save the day.

Plus Points:

Vishwak Sen has a solid screen presence, and who better than him to understand his own strengths? The action sequences involving him have come out well, with the actor’s swag and attitude on full display.

Some gags featuring Tarak Ponnappa’s frustration evoke decent laughs here and there. The movie finds its footing in the penultimate moments. The sequences showcasing the guests gathering courage and going after the perpetrators are good.

The backstory, with an emotional touch, is decently handled. Vivek Chepuri, who plays the antagonist, delivers a fine performance. Gayatri Bharadwaj, Murali Sharma, Srikanth Iyenger, Karthikeya, Anirudh Bhaskar, EZY, and the other supporting cast are decent in their roles.

Minus Points:

Since it’s a survival thriller, the audience must feel the tension in the proceedings and root for the characters to make it out alive. However, Cult stumbles in building the necessary tension despite the gore and heavy bloodshed.

Cult doesn’t shy away from admitting its inspiration from Squid Game, with a character openly mentioning the show’s name. However, the life-threatening games fail to pack a punch, and this is one area where Cult could have done much better. Not only are the games unexciting, they also come across as silly.

Till Vishwak Sen makes his entry, the narrative remains ineffective despite an interesting concept. The interval is neat, but the graph dips again in the post-interval portions. Some trimming was needed.

Technical Aspects:

Ravi Basrur’s background score is fiery, while cinematographer Aravind Viswanathan captures the action sequences well. The production design is good, with the birthday party setup established nicely. The editing could have been better.

Vishwak Sen scores well in the action part, but his direction works only in bits and pieces. The attempt to deliver a slick survival thriller is evident, but the execution leaves room for improvement.

Verdict:

On the whole, Cult is an okayish survival thriller with some moments working in its favour. Vishwak Sen does well, and the final thirty minutes are designed well. However, the film doesn’t effectively deliver the required tension and thrills due to the underwhelming survival games, preventing it from becoming a satisfying watch.

Movie Name : Funky

Release Date : Feb 13, 2026
123telugu.com Rating : 2.5/5
Starring : Vishwak Sen, Kayadu Lohar, Naresh, VTV Ganesh, and others.
Director : Anudeep KV
Producers : Naga Vamsi S – Sai Soujanya
Music Director : Bheems Ceciroleo
Cinematographer : Suresh Sarangam
Editor :  Navin Nooli

Vishwak Sen has joined hands with Jathi Rathnalu fame KV Anudeep for the comedy entertainer Funky. Kayadu Lohar is the female lead. The movie hit the big screens today and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Komal (Vishwak Sen) is the director of a film titled Funky. Due to the constant increase in the budget, the producer’s (Naresh Vijayakrishna) health takes a toll, after which his daughter Chitra (Kayadu Lohar) takes charge. She decides to replace the director to complete the remaining shoot. What happens next? Does Komal regain control? This forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Vishwak Sen makes a departure from his mass avatar and does a good job in the comedy department. He delivers the quirky one-liners neatly, and it’s refreshing to see the actor in a different role. However, it would have been much better had the writing supported him more effectively.

Kayadu Lohar is effective as the producer’s daughter and she looks quite beautiful on screen. Her chemistry with the protagonist works well. Some jokes in both halves land to an extent. The runtime is thankfully short, which slightly works in the film’s favour, especially since it lacks a proper story.

Minus Points:

In the pre-release promotional campaign, the makers repeatedly asked audiences to forget logic and enjoy the comedy. Even with the right expectations, the film may not fully satisfy viewers. The main problem with Funky is its lack of proper flow, as the movie feels like disjointed pieces stitched together.

Almost every scene appears random, making it difficult to connect with the film as a whole, though a few jokes work here and there. Jathi Rathnalu worked despite its silliness because the story kept moving, but Funky feels meaningless, with no clear direction. This approach may not sit well with the majority of the audience.

While some films are made purely for entertainment they still manage to have a basic storyline, but Funky falls short in this aspect, lacking a proper conflict point or emotional depth. The movie does try to turn emotional towards the end, but it just doesn’t work. The songs are below par, and the dubbing feels off in several scenes.

Technical Aspects:

Bheems Ceciroleo does a very ordinary job, as the songs don’t click at all. Suresh Sarangam’s cinematography is pleasant, and the film looks colorful in every frame. The production values are fair. The editing is choppy, but since the scenes themselves feel very random, one can’t complain much about this department.

As much as Anudeep KV concentrated on the one-liners, it would have been far better had he focused on designing proper comedy blocks instead. The decision to rely excessively on one-liners doesn’t quite work here. The entire Sampath Raj track feels pointless.

Verdict:

On the whole, Funky is a below-par comedy drama that feels like a compilation of random scenes stitched together. Anudeep KV tries to evoke comedy mainly through one-liners and, in the process, he pays very little attention to the story and screenplay. Vishwak Sen and Kayadu Lohar perform well in their respective roles. While some jokes work, the film fails to deliver overall, making it a disappointing outing from Anudeep KV.

LailaTelugu Movie Review

Movie Name : Laila

Release Date : February 14, 2025
123telugu.com Rating : 2/5
Starring : Vishwaksen,Akanksha Sharma
Director : Ram Narayan
Producer : Sahu Garapati
Music Director : Leon James
Cinematographer : Richard Prasad
Editors : Sagar Dadi

Mass Ka Das Vishwak Sen’s new movie Laila has been released amidst controversy. It has arrived in cinemas today. Read our review to find out how it is.

Story:

Sonu (Vishwak Sen) is the owner of a beauty parlour, admired by many women in his neighborhood. However, he finds himself at odds with local rowdy Rustum (Abhimanyu Singh) and SI Shankar (Babloo Prithviraj). To escape their threats, Sonu takes on a new identity as Laila. How this transformation unfolds and where it leads forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Vishwak Sen’s decision to take on a challenging role with a lady getup is bold, and he puts in a decent effort. As Laila, he delivers a passable performance.

Abhimanyu Singh plays his role well, adding a few moments of comic relief, particularly in the second half. His presence gives the film some much-needed liveliness.

Minus Points:

The film’s biggest drawback is its outdated and weak storyline, which lacks depth or purpose. The narrative follows a predictable formula, offering little novelty beyond what was already revealed in the trailer. While there was potential for an engaging comedy, the inclusion of crass humour and unnecessary dialogues diminishes its appeal.

Vishwak Sen’s choice of script remains questionable, as the film lacks any emotional connection or a strong justification for his character’s transformation. The screenplay is underdeveloped, and the execution leaves much to be desired. The director’s approach appears directionless, and some of the messaging, including outdated notions about complexion, feels unnecessary.

Akanksha Sharma’s role is minimal, with most of her screen time limited to songs that fail to leave an impression. Most of the characters are underdeveloped. The inclusion of Chiranjeevi references here and there feels forced and unnecessary.

Technical Aspects:

Director Ram Narayan’s writing and execution do not make a strong impact. A well-structured screenplay could have made Laila a better entertainer, but weak storytelling holds it back.

Leon James’ music lacks appeal, and the cinematography is average at best. Despite a crisp runtime, the editing does not add much to the film’s flow. Production values are decent but do not significantly enhance the viewing experience.

Verdict:

On the whole, Laila is a silly, tedious and poorly executed film that fails to engage. Despite Vishwak Sen’s efforts, the weak script, crass humour, and lack of depth make it a dull and unconvincing watch. With no emotional core, subpar writing, and uninspired direction, Laila ends up as a forgettable misfire that hardly justifies its existence.
