Jhund is a film that has been in the making for quite some time now. The film starring Amitabh Bachchan was released today and let’s see how it is.

Story:

The film is based on the real life of football coach Vijay Barse played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is a retired sports teacher in Pune who establishes an NGO called Slum Soccer. His motto is to rehabilitate lower caste kids by keeping them off drugs and crime. Vijay takes these kids to his shrine and forms a football team to participate in a competition for slum kids. How did he manage all this is the story.

Plus Points:

Amitabh Bachchan is top notch as the football coach. The manner in which he goes about finding talent and giving them coaching is shown nicely by the legendary actor. The way Big B shows the emotions of his life and gives faith to the kids is top notch.

One of the biggest assets of the film are the supporting cast. The kids and actors who play slum dwellers do an excellent job. Their make up and the manner in which they showcase pain, happiness and distress makes up for most of the screen time and looks good.

Minus Points:

Amitabh Bachchan is a football coach but there are no scenes of him playing soccer which looks a bit over the top in a sports drama which is based on soccer. The film has predictable emotions in the second half as such sports dramas have come out already.

The film has an intense subject but it does not have those thrilling elements that are required for such films. There was so much scope for the drama to be cut short but the film keeps going on and on missing the commercial aspects. The hyped competition is also not showcased which is also a let down.

Technical Aspects:

Jhund has solid camerawork as all the slum setups have been showcased in a solid manner. Dialogues written for Big B are good and evoke good emotions. The editing is average but the BGM by Ajay Atul is superb. The production values are impressive. Coming to the director Nagraj Manjule, he made the path breaking Sairat in Marathi. He has chosen a superb plot but has narrated in a predictable manner and not showcased anything special.

Verdict:

On the whole, Jhund has its heart in its right place storywise. Amitabh Bachchan is also amazing in his role but too much drama spoils the fun. A few more thrilling scenes of the sport would have made things better. If you love sports dramas, give this film a shot.
