Generally, there is a notion that A-rated films won’t perform well at the box office and that family audiences may tend to avoid such movies. But in the last couple of years, multiple adult-certified films have emerged as money spinners, taking the box office by storm. Let’s take a look at the all-time top 5 grossing A-rated Indian films.
Dhurandhar:
The latest box-office typhoon, Dhurandhar, spearheaded by Ranveer Singh, is now the all-time highest-grossing A-rated Indian film. The spy action thriller directed by Aditya Dhar earned more than Rs. 1000 crores gross and became the first adult-certified Indian film to cross this mammoth milestone.
Animal:
Ranbir Kapoor and Sandeep Reddy Vanga unleashed mayhem at the box office with Animal, which stirred conversations and controversies due to some of its portions. Despite extreme adult content, the film worked big time at the box office, earning Rs. 915 crores worldwide in its lifetime. Animal clashed with Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur and was thus slightly affected.
Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire:
Prabhas-led action drama Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire is the third highest-grossing A-rated Indian film with about Rs. 618 crores gross worldwide. The fact that this number was achieved despite clashing with King Khan’s Dunki tells a lot about the havoc created by Prashanth Neel’s directorial.
Coolie:
Many might not even be aware that Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie was A-rated. Those who know are still wondering what made the censor board issue an A certificate when the content was suitable for family audiences. The action drama received mixed reviews and didn’t meet expectations content-wise, but that didn’t stop it from making massive bucks. In its lifetime, Coolie earned Rs. 518 crores gross globally.
Kabir Singh:
Despite being released in 2019, Kabir Singh, headlined by Shahid Kapoor and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is still in the top 5 list of all-time highest earners among A-rated Indian films. The film, which is the official remake of Tollywood blockbuster Arjun Reddy, collected Rs. 377 crores gross in its lifetime.
