Star Tamil director AR Murugadoss’ recently released political drama, Sarkar, has been mired in numerous controversies. Several leaders of the ruling AIADMK party had alleged that a few scenes in Sarkar portrayed government’s populist people welfare schemes in negative light. The state government had even filed a case against Murugadoss.
Today, a hearing took place in the Madras High Court and the state government demanded an unconditional apology from Murugadoss for criticizing TN government’s welfare schemes. The state prosecutor even asked Murugadoss to give a written undertaking that he will never criticize the Tamil Nadu government in his movies.
In his response, Murugadoss’ spokesperson said that Murugadoss will not give any such undertaking. “If an offense is proven, he is ready to apologise. But it is against the fundamental right of speech and expression of my client for the government to dictate what can and cannot be shown in his film regarding their policies,” Murugadoss’ spokesperson told the media.
