In February, the makers announced that Rajinikanth’s 2014 film Kochadaiiyaan would return to theatres in an AI-enhanced, digitally restored version. However, the ambitious re-release soon hit a roadblock after legal hurdles cast uncertainty over its release plans.
The project has now received a major boost. The Madras High Court recently dismissed a petition seeking to stall the re-release, observing that the financial dispute cited in the case had no bearing on the film’s distribution rights. The ruling has effectively cleared the way for the AI-restored version to arrive in cinemas.
With the legal hurdle now out of the way, fans are eagerly awaiting the official release date announcement. Many remain nostalgic about Kochadaiiyaan, which broke new ground as India’s first photorealistic motion-capture feature film, and are keen to see how modern AI technology has enhanced its visuals.
Directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth, the film stars Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles and was backed by Eros International. More than a decade after its original release, the AI-restored version aims to introduce the film to a new generation while offering longtime fans a refreshed theatrical experience.
