A day after Mohanlal took over charge as the new president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the Malayalam industry is facing heat from the The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), an association of women artistes in the same industry. The latest controversy is that AMMA has reinstated Dileep’s membership, close to 11 months after he was expelled.
Last year, Dileep was named as one of the primary accused in the abduction and sexual assault of a prominent actress. Following their investigation, the police officials arrested Dileep and he was sent to jail for few months. Currently, the actor is on bail and is completing his pending projects.
With AMMA taking Dileep back even before the investigation about his involvement is done, the WCC wrote a scathing letter to AMMA’s President and stated that this move is an insult to the survivor. They also questioned the logic behind taking Dileep back into the fold and whether it will be deemed illegal by the law. It remains to be seen how Mohanlal and his team addresses this controversy.
