Mohanlal’s much-awaited L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, released in cinemas on March 27, 2025, and sparked mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike. Now, the film is all set to make its digital debut on Jio Hotstar on April 24, 2025, in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.
However, the biggest question remains: Will Jio Hotstar stream the original, uncut version or the re-censored one that released after the controversy?
The film drew heavy criticism upon release due to certain scenes and the use of specific names that offended a section of viewers. In response, the makers voluntarily re-censored the movie, making 24 cuts and removing approximately 2 minutes of footage, including changing the villain’s name. This edited version was what eventually made it to theatres post-controversy.
With the OTT release nearing, audiences are now eager to know whether the platform will present the filmmaker’s original vision, or stick to the toned-down, modified version.
Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, and Manju Warrier in key roles, Empuraan is jointly produced by Lyca Productions, Aashirvad Cinemas, and Sree Gokulam Movies, with music composed by Deepak Dev.
