National Award winner Rajesh Touchriver is coming up with a film titled Dahini, which has Tanishtha Chatterjee and JD Chakravarthi in the lead roles. The movie also has Ashique Hussain, Badrul Islam, Angana Roy, Riju Bajaj, Jagannath Seth, Sruthy Jayan, Dilip Das, and Dattatreya in other crucial roles. Human Rights activist and Padma Shree recipient Sunitha Krishnan and Pradeep Narayanan jointly produce the movie under Orion Pictures International Pvt. Ltd. and SunTouch Productions.

This is a social thriller about the scourge of witch-hunting. After winning the Best International Feature Film honor at the Pacific Beach International Festival, it has added another feather to its cap by making it to the Swedish International Film Festival. The film depicts how this witch-hunting leads to gender-based violence in a touching way. In most cases, women are subjected to this with hunting due to reasons like property disputes.

The film, shot in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, where this practice is said to be rampant, is close to reality. The writing department was shocked to learn about various facts. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that nearly 2937 women were killed in the country due to the suspicion that they were practicing witchcraft. UN report stated that over 25000 women were killed between 1987-2003 in the name of witchcraft in the country. However, the actual numbers might be even higher.

According to the movie team, audiences would be surprised when they watch the film. Producer Sunitha Krishnan said that even in the modern world, gender-based violence and cruelty were occurring and added that their film attempts to expose the existence of the centuries-old evil practice. Another producer Pradeep Narayanan said that their film is a poignant attempt at how thousands of women are being witch-hunted in today’s India and added he is fortunate to have produced the movie.
