Director SS Rajamouli, known for films like Baahubali, Eega, and RRR, is currently working on his next big film Varanasi with Mahesh Babu on a massive scale and budget. Over 50% of the shoot is complete, and the team plans to wrap production by July 2026.

In a recent interaction with international media outlet Collider, Rajamouli spoke about the film and cleared a key misconception about its genre and antagonist that has been circulating among audiences.

He confirmed that Varanasi is not a sci-fi film, but a blend of mythological and fantasy elements. He said the antagonist, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is a powerful character whose impact comes mainly through facial expressions and screen presence. He added that the role has no connection to science fiction and that the wheelchair seen in the visuals has story relevance. Rajamouli did not share further details about the villain or the plot, keeping the suspense intact.

The makers have announced a worldwide release on April 7, 2027, in multiple languages. The film is being designed for an IMAX viewing experience. Priyanka Chopra plays a key role, with Prakash Raj and R. Madhavan in important roles.

The film is produced by KL Narayana under Sri Durga Arts, with SS Karthikeya associated with the production. Music is composed by Oscar winner MM Keeravani. More updates are expected soon.
