For decades, filmmakers across the country shied away from penning strong, author-backed characters for leading ladies. The reason is simple, it’s a male-dominated society. Even though times have changed in recent years, women actors are yet to get their due in Indian Cinema.

Now, in a latest interview with a popular English daily while promoting her message-oriented short film, Devi, star actress Shruti Haasan stated that she will never act in a movie in which the heroine’s character is irrelevant.

“When I pickup films, I try that within the larger narrative, my character’s voice is there for a reason. Of course, in the past, I have done films where the woman’s voice is completely irrelevant to the narrative. This is not something I want to continue to do, or enjoy doing now. Today, I pickup roles that are not in-your-face feminist, but integral to the narrative and I ensure that my characters are sensitive and impactful,” Shruti said.
