One of the most popular franchises in Hindi cinema, Drishyam, has now come up with its final chapter, Drishyam: The Conclusion. While the Malayalam version is yet to conclude, Bollywood has taken a separate route with a new story altogether. Let’s see if the much-hyped Ajay Devgn starrer lives up to expectations.

Story:

After the events of Drishyam 2, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu) is completely disturbed and decides to take her own life. Her husband, Mahesh (Rajat Kapoor), stops her and convinces her to reopen the case and bring Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) behind bars for their son’s death mystery. They team up with Crime Branch S.P. Rajveer Singh Tomar (Jaideep Ahlawat) to bring Vijay down. The rest of the film follows the cat-and-mouse game between Vijay Salgaonkar and his enemies.

Plus Points:

Probably, this hasn’t happened in Indian cinema before. The predecessors of Drishyam: The Conclusion are remakes of the Malayalam Drishyam films created by Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph, and this is an open fact. However, the Hindi Drishyam makers took a big risk by going ahead with an original script, and it paid off big time.

Drishyam: The Conclusion has a completely new narrative and is in no way connected to Malayalam Drishyam 3. The way the threequel’s story has been designed is brilliant, and kudos to Abhishek Pathak and team for cooking up something like this on the content front.

Drishyam 2 (Hindi) itself had some good changes from the original, and this time, the approach the makers have taken to keep it connected to the second part is fabulous. The pacing is solid for the most part, and there are many edge-of-the-seat moments that will keep us deeply immersed.

The first half is a neat mix of tension, comedy, and police investigation, with Jaideep Ahlawat going up against Ajay Devgn. Their face-off scene during the interval is brilliant. What comes across as surprising is how well the comedy is written into such a crime subject and how seamlessly it blends with the narrative. Gaitonde character will leave us in splits with his fun banters.

The second half moves into the courtroom zone, and the film gets even more impressive here. The courtroom scenes are exhilarating, and the twists are too good. Ajay Devgn is solid once again as a protective family man, and the subtle emotions he displays show how great an actor he is.

The best thing that has happened to the film is the casting choice of Jaideep Ahlawat. He nails the role to the tee and takes the impact several notches higher. Prakash Raj, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Kamlesh Sawant, and others are pretty good in their roles.

Minus Points:

Since this is the final chapter of the franchise, we can guess who will end up on the winning side, and that takes away some of the surprise factor. The film does maintain the tension neatly, but we can understand what will happen in the climax eventually.

It’s all about how the film reaches that point, and in that regard, the makers have done a solid job. Tabu’s role is relegated to the background, while Prakash Raj and Jaideep Ahlawat take charge of the proceedings to fight against Ajay Devgn.

Technical Aspects:

Ravi Basrur’s background score is good in the second half, but he could have done a better job in the first half. Some moments needed a more electrifying score.

Sudhir Chaudhary’s cinematography is splendid, while the editing by Sandeep Francis is flawless. Production values are neat, while the dialogues carry a spark.

The writing and direction by Abhishek Pathak make Drishyam: The Conclusion what it is. There was an apprehension about how the third part would turn out, but he has done a fantastic job.

Verdict:

On the whole, Drishyam: The Conclusion is a befitting finale to one of the best franchises in Indian cinema. Where the Malayalam Drishyam 3 makers fumbled, Bollywood delivered big time. When a good story is dragged needlessly, it loses its magic, and the Hindi Drishyam 3 makers understood this assignment clearly. An interesting original story, neat screenplay, situational comedy, and enthralling moments make this Ajay Devgn starrer a highly satisfactory watch. The climax isn’t a surprise, as we can guess who will win the battle eventually, making things slightly predictable, but the movie does a solid job of maintaining the momentum throughout. This one will tear apart the box office. Recommended.
