Heist comedy drama Crew, starring Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles, is now running in theatres. Let’s see how the film is.

Story:

Jasmine Kohli (Kareena Kapoor), Geeta Sethi (Tabu), and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon) are air hostesses working at Kohinoor Airlines, which is headed by Vijay Walia (Saswata Chatterjee). The employees of Kohinoor Airlines haven’t been paid salaries for a few months. HR officer (Rajesh Sharma) makes the employees believe everything is going well in the company and that the salaries will be given soon. Jasmine, Geeta, and Divya quickly learn that Kohinoor Airlines is going through a financial crisis, As the three are in dire need of money, they choose an illegal way to solve their problems. What is it? Did they get caught? What happened to Kohinoor Airlines in the end? This is the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

By now you would have understood that the film is based on Vijay Mallya and his Kingfisher Airlines. Movies like Jawan raised the conversation about this bad debts issue, but Crew takes a different and funny approach. What if someone working within the company loots their employer, who has made them suffer extremely without paying salaries for many months? The very idea of Crew is fascinating.

The movie is filled with a good number of comedy blocks, and the tongue-in-cheek humor is sure to evoke laughter. The humor scenes worked mainly due to the comedy timing of Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon. The trio killed it with their stunning performances, and their fans are sure to have a gala time watching their combo scenes.

Though the three did a pretty good job, Kareena and Tabu take the cake with their captivating screen presence and conviction. Along with the humor, the makers tried to balance the emotions as well. Though there were a handful of emotional scenes, they were handled neatly without going overboard.

The narrative is kept light-hearted for the most part, and the back-and-forth screenplay choice worked well in the first hour. The writing is good as far as the main characterizations are concerned. Diljit Dosanjh, Rajesh Sharma, and Kapil Sharma are decent in their supporting roles.

Minus Points:

The movie defies logic, and the way a few scenes are dealt with looks outright silly. The heist episode, which comes at the end, could have been written in a better manner. One might wonder how the three female leads managed to pull it off so easily without much struggle. Simply put, the heist episode is entertaining with jokes, but at the same time, the convenient writing and lack of logic derail the overall impact.

It is understandable that the makers want to keep the film crisp (the Runtime is 2 hours and 3 minutes), but in doing so, a few sequences are rushed, and the film ends in an abrupt manner. The movie’s nature is such that it appeals more to urban audiences than the masses.

Technical Aspects:

The songs are situational and fit into the narrative well. The background score is impactful. Anuj Rakesh Dhawan’s cinematography is neat, and the production values are decent. The editing could have been better.

Rajesh Krishnan’s direction is decent. Crew is a bit similar to Lootcase, which is Rajesh’s previous directorial venture, as both these films rely mostly on fun moments. The second half could have been handled in a better manner.

Verdict:

On the whole, Crew is a time-pass entertainer relying mostly on fun moments. The movie is inspired by real-life events, and the way the lead characters are written is relatable and makes them likable. Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon are excellent in their roles, and their on-screen chemistry is the film’s trump card. The logic-defying heist episode and the rushed sequences in the second half restrict the film from reaching its full potential. Crew isn’t a memorable film by any means, but the fun quotient makes it a decent watch.
