So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and suggesting shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal. The film is available on Netflix.

What’s it about?

The film is a remake of Imtiaz Ali’s own 2010 film Love Aaj Kal and is set in different time zones this time. In the present day, Veer(Karthik Aryan) and Zoe(Sara Ali Khan) hit it up at a night club and start getting intimate. Suddenly, Veer gets a feeling that Zoe could be the love of his life and slows things down which does not go well with Zoe. In the same film, yet another story set in 1990. Raghu(Karthik Aryan) is in love with Leena(Arushi Sharma) but things do not go well for him due to obstacles from the girl’s parents. The rest of the story is as to how Veer and Raghu find their love finally in their respective time zones.

What’s good?

Karthik Aryan’s role set in 1990 is so cool and Karthik does his act convincingly. The way he brings out the innocence and delivers a lovable performance is very good. His love interest played by Arushi Sharma also does a cool job. In both the love stories, the period romance looks good. Randeep Hooda is good in his role. A few songs have been shot well and sound good. The dialogues between Sara Ali and Karthik Aryan are contemporary and nicely written.

What’s bad?

The thought of Imtiaz Ali remaking his own film itself looks weird. His narration is bland and has nothing new to showcase. Sara Ali, who is known for her looks and natural performance is a big turn off in the film. The way she overacts as Zoe is way too bold and does not sink at all with the setup. Her character graph, the way she thinks has been narrated in a very irritating manner. The romance between Sara and Karthik Aryan also looks forced. The situations are predictable and drama looks bad and gets you suffocated most of the time. The film is slow and does not have much to cheer about.

Final Word

Overall, Love Aaj Kal is a film that many would get tempted to watch on the OTT platform seeing a cute couple of Sara Ali Khan and Karthik Aryan. But the drama, romance, and performances look so forced that you get irritated and look for other options right away. A boring and tedious watch.
