Lately, many big films have been taking the direct OTT route and the latest to join the list is Vicky Kaushal’s Govinda Naam Mera. It is a crime comedy thriller with Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar as the female leads. The film is streaming on Hotstar, and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Govinda (Vicky Kaushal) leads a miserable married life and is tortured by his wife, Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar). He is a choreographer by profession and maintains an extra-marital affair with Suku (Kiara Advani), who also is a choreographer. Govinda is so desperate to take a divorce from his wife and lead a happy life with Suku. But Gauri demands two crores as alimony which stops him. Govinda faces a property dispute with his stepbrother and also lands in a tussle with Ajith Dharkar (Shiyaji Shinde). In between all this, Govinda and Suku get trapped in Gauri’s murder case. What happened next? Did Govinda and Suku manage to get rid of the crime? Did Govinda solve his problems? This forms part of the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Vicky Kaushal is a proven artist, and he once again shows his mettle with Govinda Naam Mera. As a person surrounded by multiple problems, Vicky gave a very good performance. His expressions were perfect, and he looked pretty comfortable in his role. Vicky Kaushal’s comedy timing is also nicely utilized.

Kiara Advani has been playing more glamorous roles till now, and this film shows the other dimension of the actress. She was stunning as Suku, and in the very crucial jail scene, her acting was simply brilliant. This also is one of the well-executed scenes in the film. She scored nice marks both in the glamour and acting departments.

The last half an hour of the film is pretty interesting as things start to unravel one by one. The twists are showcased fairly, making an impact, and one could not see them coming. A song is nicely composed, and a star hero’s cameo is the surprise package here that will delight the audience.

Minus Points:

The writing in the last forty minutes was superior, but it faltered in other places. Despite having a good potential to turn the film into a good crime thriller, the makers didn’t develop an exciting screenplay. The film thus takes a middling route to reach the climax, and hence the viewers won’t get engaged completely.

The first hour is completely below-par with generic moments. Many subplots are included during this period, but none make a proper impact and just add to the film’s length. They also don’t have much importance in the latter part. It seemed that these subplots were just placed randomly without any connection.

The portions of Shiyaji Shinde and his son are quite boring and routine. The narrative also becomes predictable till the final part, and the comedy, too, wasn’t good. The makers tried too hard to generate laughs but couldn’t succeed completely.

Technical Aspects:

The music was fine, and so were the production values. The cinematography by Vidushi Tiwari is perfect according to the film’s genre. However, the editing work needed more corrections. A few scenes should have been interlinked well.

Coming to the director, Shashank Khaitan, he did a pretty average job with the film. He also handled the film’s story and screenplay. The plot point is okay, but the screenplay was mediocre, and he should have done a lot better job in making the film interesting. Many subplots confuse as to what the director exactly wanted to portray.

Verdict:

On the whole, Govinda Naam Mera has a few interesting moments. The last half an hour and the performances hold the key. Had the screenplay been tighter and more interesting in the rest of the portions, the film could have been a good one. Hence it ends up just being an okay watch this weekend.
