Kudumbasthan, a recently released Tamil film, is now streaming on the OTT platform ZEE 5 in multiple languages, including Telugu. Let’s see how it fares.

Story:

Naveen (Manikandan), a middle-class man, is living a simple and happy life after marrying his love, Nila (Saanve Meghna), through a registered marriage. But just when everything seems perfect, his world turns upside down – he loses his job, and his financial struggles begin. With mounting pressure, Naveen desperately borrows money from different sources, only to find himself entangled in unexpected troubles. Who is behind his misfortunes? Can he overcome the chaos and rebuild his life? The film takes us through his emotional and unpredictable journey.

Plus Points:

Manikandan delivers an impressive performance, effortlessly carrying the film on his shoulders. His character is relatable, and his struggles feel authentic, making the film a decent watch.

Guru Somasundaram shines with his comedic timing and expressions, especially in the interval sequence, which stands out as one of the movie’s highlights. Saanve Meghna plays her part well in a limited role.

Supporting actors like Kudassanad Kanakam and Sundarrajan add depth to the story, contributing to the overall appeal of the film.

Minus Points:

While the film has entertaining comedy, it struggles with pacing issues. The second half slows down, making the protagonist’s repeated struggles feel monotonous.

The film’s emotional moments lack depth, which weakens the impact of key scenes. A stronger emotional connection would have elevated the story. Saanve Meghna’s role could have been better developed, adding more emotional weight to the narrative.

The Telugu dubbing is passable but lacks authenticity. A more refined dubbing effort could have improved the viewing experience.

Technical Aspects:

Director Rajeshwar Kalisamy, despite being a debutant, does a commendable job in balancing serious themes with humour. His attempt to showcase middle-class struggles through a comedic lens is appreciable, but the film lacks tight screenplay control, leading to unnecessary scenes that slow down the narrative.

Sujith N. Subramaniam’s cinematography and Vaisagh’s music complement the film’s tone but don’t stand out. The editing by Kannan Balu could have been sharper, especially in the second half, to maintain a better pace. The Telugu dubbing, while acceptable, needed more effort for a natural feel.

Verdict:

On the whole, Kudumbasthan is a decent comedy entertainer with commendable performances, particularly by Manikandan and Guru Somasundaram. While the comedy works well, especially towards the climax, pacing issues, a lack of emotional depth, and repetitive scenes in the second half affect the film’s overall impact. If you’re looking for a lighthearted movie to enjoy with your family this weekend, this film is a good choice.
