Bollywood star hero Shahid Kapoor’s new film Bloody Daddy has been released directly on the OTT platform Jio Cinema. Ali Abbas Zafar, who directed superhits like Tiger Zinda Hai and Sultan, helmed Bloody Daddy. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Sumair (Shahid Kapoor), an officer of NCB (Narcotics Control Bureau), along with his colleague Jaggi (Zeishan Quadri), attacks a car carrying 50 crores worth of cocaine and takes the drugs into their possession. The drugs belong to Sikander (Ronit Roy Bose), and hence he kidnaps Sumair’s son Atharv (Saartaj Kakkar). Sikander tells Sumair that he will free the latter’s son only if his drugs are returned. What happened further? What challenges did Sumair go through to save his son? This forms part of the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

It is Shahid Kapoor’s show all the way. The terrific actor unleashes the beast in him, and he is just spectacular in the action episodes. His screen presence is remarkable, and he holds our attention throughout. The actor also has got wonderful comedy timing, and his scene with the Nepalese hotel staff is quite hilarious.

The movie begins on a good note, as the plot is established right away in the opening sequence. The characters are nicely introduced, and then we get to see their agendas too. The first hour is pretty much engaging without any dull moments, and also the proceedings are racy here.

Diana Penty is just too good in her limited role. The action set pieces are superbly designed, and particularly the one involving Shahid Kapoor and Rajeev Khandelwal is very intense and well-shot. The movie’s runtime is just about 2 hours, and the editing team did a superlative job.

Minus Points:

While the first half was engrossing, the movie lost steam in the second hour. Particularly the last forty minutes are quite underwhelming. The film has a wafer-thin plot, and hence the makers tried to fill it with so many action sequences. While the action part stimulates interest initially, the overdosage of the same over the end became a disadvantage in one way.

Especially the climax action sequence fails to provide a wow feeling, and the movie ends in a routine manner. The second hour has just action, and the film scores low on the emotional front. There should have been a good balance of action and emotional elements, but the movie is just filled with action. The final song could have been avoided altogether. Ronit Bose Roy and Rajeev Khandelwal are under-utilized.

Not many know that Bloody Daddy is based on the French superhit Sleepness Night which was previously remade by Kamal Haasan as Thoongaa Vanam (Cheekati Rajyam in Telugu). The audience who would have watched either the original or Kamal’s film might not show interest in watching this remake as there are very minimal changes. Except for the Madhushalini track in Kamal’s Cheekati Rajyam, everything remains the same in Bloody Daddy.

Technical Aspects:

The background score by Julius Packiam is decent. Marcin Laskawiec’s camera work is neat, and he has captured the action sequences brilliantly. The production design is stunning, and the makers spent quite heavily on the movie. The editing is perfect.

Coming to the director, Ali Abbas Zafar, he did just an okay job with the movie. As it has been very long since the original and Kamal’s remake version was released, the makers should have tweaked the story and added some additional layers for better impact. Ali Abbas Zafar’s screenplay is good in the first half, but the same hasn’t been maintained in the last hour.

Verdict:

On the whole, Bloody Daddy is a partly engaging action thriller. Shahid Kapoor excels in his role, and his screen presence is superb. The first hour entertains and has some fun moments, but the second hour is underwhelming. There is a heavy dosage of action sans any emotion. Hence it ends up being an okay watch.
