Vishwadev Rachakonda and Shivathmika Rajasekhar’s Telugu web series Varam is now streaming on JioHotstar. After releasing two episodes last week, the makers have released two more episodes this week. Check out how they fare in this review.
Story:
Raju (Vishwadev Rachakonda) decides to turn his boon into a fortune and helps a couple win Rs. 1 crore on a game show. However, the couple tells him that the money is their hard-earned money, which upsets him. Raju then decides to try his luck in another way to become rich. He tries his hand at the stock market and earns Rs. 1 crore. He then buys the brothel to take Satya (Shivathmika Rajasekhar) away for good. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
Vishwadev Rachakonda continues his decent performance in these episodes as well. The rags-to-riches story gives him a decent character to portray, and he performs as required. The way his desire to become rich and earn respect slowly turns into greed and arrogance, along with a condescending attitude towards those close to him, is shown well.
Shivathmika Rajasekhar is just okay in these two episodes. The scenes where Vishwadev gets humiliated and the way he plans his revenge are neatly portrayed.
The supporting characters also do their part well. The different ways Vishwadev tries to make money are presented well.
Minus Points:
After a decent start, the story slows down a bit in these episodes. Though the lead character’s actions are executed well, they are not very engaging. At some points, it is also easy to guess his next moves to earn money.
Shivathmika is present, but her character doesn’t have much scope to perform in these episodes. The emotional parts could have been handled better, especially the scene where heroine comes out of the brothel and the conversation between the hero and his parents. Both scenes had scope for better execution.
Technical Aspects:
Director Aditya Mandala could have maintained the same pace in these episodes too. Had he followed the approach he used in the first two episodes, the series could have been more interesting. The cinematography and editing are okay, and the production values are decent.
Verdict:
On the whole, the third and fourth episodes of Varam work in parts but have scope for improvement. Vishwadev Rachakonda continues his decent performance, while Shivathmika’s character could have had more scope. The emotional scenes also needed better execution. Since these are the middle episodes of the series, we need to see whether the coming episodes can hold our interest. After a decent first two episodes, this week’s episodes offer a somewhat mixed experience.
