Varam is the latest Telugu series streaming on JioHotstar, produced by Chiranjeevi’s daughter Sushmita Konidela under her banner Gold Box Entertainment. Vishwadev Rachakonda, Shivathmika Rajasekhar and Srinivas Avasarala play the lead roles in this series. The first two episodes are now streaming. Check out the review to know how they fare.
Story:
Raju (Vishwadev Rachakonda) is a slum dweller who cleans bathrooms for a living. He dreams of becoming rich and gaining respect from society. One day, an old lady grants him a boon, and from then on, he gets the ability to know the future in advance. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Plus Points:
Vishwadev Rachakonda delivers a decent performance as a man who desperately wants to become rich. His scenes where he remains silent when people mock his situation are handled well.
Shivathmika Rajasekhar plays a bold role, and her relationship with the main lead is shown neatly. How their relationship develops in the coming episodes remains to be seen. Srinivas Avasarala is also okay in a negative role, but more of his character needs to be shown to judge his performance.
The initial portions are handled neatly and establish the story well. The setup is good, and a little comedy adds to the proceedings.
Minus Points:
The first episode is decent, but the second episode feels a little slow in places. The portions where the main lead tries to convince his friends that he has received a boon could have been handled better.
Shivaji Raja and Surabhi Prabhavathi are both talented actors, but so far, they have not had much scope to perform. Srinivas Avasarala’s character also needs more depth to make him a more effective villain.
Technical Aspects:
Director Aditya Mandala tries his best to keep the content interesting. If he maintains the same approach in the remaining episodes, the series could turn out well. The cinematography and editing are passable, but the sound mixing feels a bit off. The production values are okay.
Verdict:
On the whole, Varam makes a decent start, with fine performances from the leads, especially Vishwadev Rachakonda. Though the setup is nice, the pacing could have been better in the second episode. The remaining episodes need to maintain the interest to leave a better impression. A couple of characters could also have been developed better. If you are interested in supernatural thrillers, this one is worth checking out.
