Bobby Simha and Kashmira Pardesi starrer Kollywood thriller Vasantha Mullai simultaneously released in Telugu as Vasantha Kokila. Directed by Ramanan Purushothama, the movie hit the screens today. Let’s check out how the movie is.

Story:

Rudhra (Bobby Simha) is an IT employee who underwent a lot of pressure to finish a project. One day, he faints and after examination, the doctor says that he is suffering from ‘blackout’ disorder and asks him to take rest. So, Rudhra and his girlfriend Nisha (Kashmira Paradesi) go to a hill station and stays at a hotel named Vasantha Kokila. Some strange things happen there and they shock Rudhra. What are they and what happened next forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Most of the time, Bobby Simha plays negative roles, but here in Vasantha Kokila, he played a positive role. His performance is praiseworthy. He succeeds in making audiences feel the thrills and chills with his outstanding performance. He aptly fits the role and delivers the best the character needs.

Kashmira Paradesi looks beautiful and she is okay in her given role. Actor Arya played a cameo, which is one of the important roles. His cameo is impressive and the rest of the actors justified their given roles. The director tried to maintain suspense by introducing a character who is after the couple. The character somehow manages to engage audiences in the second half.

Minus Points:

Thrillers need to be engaging. The director indirectly reveals that the actor’s medical condition is going to be the key aspect of the film. This is where the film lacks the punch. More care should have been taken regarding this aspect.

The deja vu scenes will confuse audiences and one needs to concentrate on the film to understand the proceedings. The film’s first half is better than the latter half because of the interval twist. The second half is short in length and it gives the feeling that the director ended the film quickly.

Nisha’s (Kashmira) character could have been written well to make this movie a better thriller. Her character has a lot of scope to confuse the viewer. But, the director focuses only on Rudhra’s character (Bobby Simha).

Technical Aspects:

The director tries to give a thrilling experience to audiences in the name of Vasantha Kokila. As he opened the film and talked about the lead role’s condition, one can easily predict that it’s the main character who is responsible for everything. The film could have been engrossing had the director revealed the medical condition of the main lead at the end. The film has a runtime which is crisp and thus has no scope for unnecessary scenes. But a few were included in the first hour. The screenplay is decent and the director connects everything in an okayish manner.

The cinematography is good. The usage of low light creates a tense atmosphere. The music is okay but not great. The editing is fine, thanks to the person behind it. Production values are good.

Verdict:

On the whole, Vasantha Kokila is a mediocre thriller that works only in parts. Bobby Simha’s performance stands out in this flick. Those who like thrillers and are okay with the mediocre plot can give this film a watch this weekend.
