Superstar Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 film Jailer. The film is now in theatres. Here’s how it fares.

Story:

Varma’s (Vinayakan) death leads several high-level smuggling syndicates to hunt down his killer. Muthuvel Pandiyan (Rajinikanth), who is living a quiet life, gets pulled into the conflict as he tries to find the people running the network. The rest of the story follows him as he tracks down the masterminds and deals with them.

Plus Points:

Rajinikanth sticks to the style that audiences have enjoyed over the years. His walk, the slow removal of his glasses and his screen presence still get strong reactions from the crowd. He carries the role comfortably without having to do anything very different from what we’ve seen before.

The first half leans heavily on comedy, and Namo Narayana gets plenty of screen time. His character acts like he’s in charge, even when things don’t go his way, and that works well for the humour. His scenes with Rajinikanth fit Nelson’s style of deadpan comedy, while Yogi Babu also does his part.

SJ Suryah handles the main antagonist role well, though it’s familiar territory for him. Vidya Balan plays his on-screen sister; seeing her in a negative role is a change from her usual parts. She handles it well. Suraj Venjaramoodu is also convincing in his negative role.

Anirudh Ravichander’s background score is loud and works well in several scenes, especially during the action sequences. He brings back the main theme from the first Jailer, which helps build the mood. The climax also sets things up reasonably well for the next chapter.

Minus Points:

The biggest problem with Jailer 2 is its story. The plot is thin, and much of the film seems built around setting up Rajinikanth’s hero moments. The structure also feels very similar to the first film, so the new antagonists don’t bring enough freshness to the story.

The film also slows down at several points, especially between the major scenes in the second half. With a runtime of nearly three hours, the simple story feels stretched. A tighter edit could have made the film more engaging.

The cameos, this time, deliver little excitement. Mohanlal appears only twice, while Shiva Rajkumar gets around ten minutes of screen time. Jackie Shroff has very little to do, and Mithun Chakraborty is barely used.

Hrithik Roshan gets an introductory sequence, but it doesn’t leave much of an impact. Namo Narayana’s comedy is one of the positives in the first half, but his presence is reduced in the second half, which affects the film’s momentum.

Technical Aspects:

Nelson Dilipkumar focuses more on hero moments and deadpan comedy than on building a strong story. The hero moments and comedy work in parts, but the writing could have been tighter, and the pacing needed more attention.

Anirudh’s background score does much of the work during the action scenes. Vijay Kartik Kannan’s cinematography and R. Nirmal’s editing are adequate, but a tighter edit would have helped reduce the runtime. The production values are in line with what you’d expect from a film of this scale.

Verdict:

On the whole, Jailer 2 is a decent watch that works mainly because of Rajinikanth’s screen presence and the first-half comedy, particularly the scenes involving Namo Narayana. SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan also do a solid job in their roles. However, the thin story, lengthy runtime, stretched second half, and cameos that add little to the plot hold the film back. If you are watching mainly for Rajinikanth’s signature style and screen presence, there is enough to enjoy here.

Ram Charan’s much-awaited sports drama Peddi has finally arrived in theatres amid massive expectations. Directed by Buchi Babu Sana and featuring a star-studded cast, the film generated significant buzz through its promotional campaign. With promises of intense emotions, sports drama, and a powerful central performance, does Peddi live up to the hype? Let’s find out.

Story:

Set in 2016, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports begins a search for exceptional sporting talent following India’s disappointing performance at the Olympics. During this mission, sports official Mr. Paiswal (Boman Irani) arrives in Vizianagaram and learns about Peddi (Ram Charan), a jaggery worker from an unrecognised village who has earned a reputation for excelling in multiple sports. Curious about the man and his extraordinary abilities, Paiswal sets out to uncover the story behind Peddi’s journey and his deep connection to his village.

Plus Points:

Ram Charan is undoubtedly the film’s biggest strength. After Rangasthalam, this is one of those rare roles that allows him to showcase both his acting prowess and emotional depth. He delivers a committed performance throughout and completely owns the character of Peddi. His portrayal is convincing and impactful, allowing the audience to connect with the character’s journey. The emotional maturity he displays during the pre-climax and climax portions stands out as one of the film’s major highlights.

Shiva Rajkumar plays an important role and leaves a strong impression with his screen presence. His scenes with Ram Charan are engaging and contribute significantly to the narrative. Jagapathi Babu, despite limited screen time, makes his presence felt with a powerful performance as Appalasoori. Boman Irani is effective in his role and performs with his usual ease.

The sports sequences are handled well, particularly the cricket episodes, which provide several entertaining moments. Ram Charan’s physical transformation and commitment to the demanding role deserve appreciation.

While several emotional scenes fall short of their potential, the climax delivers the emotional payoff effectively and stands out as one of the film’s strongest aspects.

Minus Points:

While Peddi aims to balance sports drama with strong emotional storytelling, a few emotional scenes do not achieve the desired impact. Although they have the potential to be deeply moving, the writing and execution make them feel somewhat ordinary. The film also follows a few familiar storytelling patterns seen in similar sports dramas, making certain portions predictable and reducing their overall effectiveness.

Although the casting choices are appropriate, many supporting characters are underutilised. Janhvi Kapoor has very little contribution to the narrative and is largely confined to songs and a romantic subplot that lacks emotional connection. Similarly, talented actors such as Rao Ramesh, John Vijay, Ajay Ghosh, and others are not given enough opportunities to leave a lasting impression.

Some viewers may find certain dialogues difficult to follow due to their presentation and the Uttarandhra dialect. Additionally, the placement of the special song Hallallallo feels forced and does not blend naturally into the narrative.

The promotional campaign also revealed more than necessary, reducing the impact of a few key moments that would have worked better as surprises.

Technical Aspects:

Director Buchi Babu Sana chooses an ambitious subject for his second feature and succeeds in delivering an engaging film for the most part. He understands Ram Charan’s strengths and utilises them effectively. However, a tighter screenplay and sharper narrative progression could have elevated the overall experience considerably.

A.R. Rahman’s music and background score enhance several important moments. While his work is effective overall, a few emotional scenes could have benefited from a more impactful score. Cinematographer Ratnavelu delivers visually appealing frames and captures both the rural backdrop and sports sequences with richness and scale.

Naveen Nooli’s editing is satisfactory, though a few portions could have been trimmed for a crisper narrative. The production values are impressive throughout, reflecting the film’s grand scale. The visual effects are decent but leave room for improvement in certain scenes.

Verdict:

On the whole, Peddi is an engaging and emotional sports drama elevated largely by Ram Charan’s outstanding performance. His portrayal of the titular character carries the film and delivers several memorable moments, particularly during the emotionally charged climax portions. Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, and the supporting cast perform their roles effectively. However, the film is not without flaws. Predictable narrative beats, underutilised supporting characters, and a few emotional sequences that fall short of their intended impact prevent it from reaching its full potential. Despite these shortcomings, Peddi remains an engaging watch, thanks to its blend of sports, emotion, and an inspiring story. Fans of Ram Charan and emotional sports dramas are likely to come away highly satisfied.

Kannada stars Shiva Rajkumar, Upendra, and Raj B. Shetty headline the fantasy action drama 45. Following its Kannada theatrical release in December 2025, the Telugu version has now arrived in cinemas as a New Year special. Here’s how the film fares.

Story:

Vinay (Raj B. Shetty) is a software employee who dreams of being killed in a bike accident after hitting a dog. Soon, parts of the dream begin to turn real. The dog, Rossy, belongs to Rayappa (Upendra), a feared don who treats it like his mother. Holding Vinay responsible for its death, Rayappa brutally attacks him and declares that he will be killed in 45 days. As Vinay starts counting his days, his life slowly falls apart. He loses his job, girlfriend, and friends, leaving him shaken and helpless. At this point, a calm and philanthropic man named Shiva (Shiva Rajkumar) enters his life and tries to guide him. Who Shiva really is, why he wants to help Vinay, and whether Rayappa spares or kills him form the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

It’s a big win for Arjun Janya, music director who made his directing debut, and convincing three stars of Kannada to act in a movie. All the characters are neatly designed.

Raj B Shetty gives a settled performance and he lives the role with audacity. The fear of death and the follow up events are well expressed through his performance.

Upendra turns a baddie for this movie, and his stylish looks and fights work well with his fans. Finally, Shiva Rajkumar, who enters in the second half, delivers a cool performance.

The initial portions are neatly arranged and executed, keeping once invested to see what will go on next. The climax fight where the different forms of god appear and fight with Upendra are well shown and it is the best part to look out in the entire movie.

Minus Points:

The film opens well and the set up makes one feel that something is planned big. But, the momentum slowly disappears and the story moves like a snail with dull scenes that sometimes feel repetitive. If we think that this is only limited to first half, it’s not. The second half, which one thinks that the real game begins, is same until the climax comes in.

It is great convincing three stars to act in a movie but at the same time, the director could have written better character arcs for them. Of course, It is the problem with the story. It is nothing impressive after all few minutes of beginning and the raciness slowly fades away to move at snail pace.

Shiva Rajkumar does his part, but the comedy scenes designed with him doesn’t land well and they feel like fillers that intervene in the seriously driven plot, only to nullify the watching experience. Upendra is okay but all his scenes are like ‘come, fight, give warning and leave’ type. The same style repeated for multiple times and it gives boredom to one watching.

The entire story is to tell the karma concept in a modern form. It is fine to tell so, but the lack of proper emotional support and strong scenes to build the momentum made it an understatement. A better writing and screenplay could have done magic.

No other characters have strong value and even mother’s emotion that became a hook point during interval was left behind after the interval. There are such many disjointed scenes in this movie.

Technical Aspects:

Arjun Janya thought of to present the karmic themes differently but his pale writing and underdeveloped characters limited his ambition. Technically, the movie is rich in money. The makers spend very huge on VFX but, it looks underwhelming on big screen. Climax is something okay not great. Background score done by the director himself is unnecessarily loud and fits only in some portions. Editing by K M Prakash is totally upsetting. It has a lot of room for trimming unnecessary and laggy scenes in both halves and thus the runtime could have been shortened. Production values are just fine.

Verdict:

On the whole, 45 is a mediocre outing despite having an ambitious story to tell. The poor writing and screenplay limited its appeal to viewers. Though the performances of the lead actors are acceptable, the limiting of their characters being better, and unnecessary scenes along with lag, made the fantasy drama feel underwhelming. Except the climax scene, there is no worthy scene to watch out for. It is better to look out for other alternative movies to spend this New Year eve.
