Bad Boy Karthik is the least promoted film of Naga Shaurya. After many delays, the film has finally hit the big screens, and let’s see how the movie is.

Story:

Karthik (Naga Shaurya) is very fond of his sister Kasturi (Sridevi Vijayakumar), a reputed lawyer in Vizag. As Karthik roams around aimlessly and picks up fights with random goons, Kasturi decides to send him abroad. However, Karthik comes up with a plan to get his visa rejected so that he can stay with his sister.

Meanwhile, Kasturi locks horns with Govindappa (Mime Gopi), a dreaded goon from Kadiri who has affected the lives of many farmers. Enraged by this, Govindappa decides to kill Kasturi, and the rest of the film is about how Karthik saves his sister.

Plus Points:

Naga Shaurya delivers a sincere performance as a brother who goes all out to protect his sister. Even though the writing doesn’t offer much support, the actor does his best to elevate the proceedings. He also looks charming and stylish on screen. Sridevi Vijaykumar performs very well in her role. The interval fight sequence set against the backdrop of the Kadiri Jathara is well-shot and effectively choreographed, featuring massive crowds.

Minus Points:

The concept of ruthless villains trying to establish authority by affecting the lives of poor and innocent people, and the hero stepping in to save them, has been showcased in umpteen Tollywood films so far. Some recent films have also succeeded with this formulaic storyline. Audiences are fine with these done-to-death plot points, but what matters most is how they are presented. Bad Boy Karthik is very weak in this aspect.

From the word go, the film feels heavily outdated in almost every frame. The makers have visibly spent well, but perhaps they should have paid more attention to the writing, too. The farmers’ track lacks any emotional connect and doesn’t evoke much feeling. The screenplay lacks a proper flow and wanders around without much progression.

The love track between the lead pair is both boring and confusing. The film doesn’t even attempt to show when the female lead started having feelings for the hero. The episodes involving Saikumar and his wife try to evoke laughs, but they hardly land.

While the romantic track takes the center stage in the first half and causes boredom, the second half goes on and on with endless action that severely tests the patience levels. The villain characters are routine in nature and don’t have any freshness.

Technical Aspects:

Even Harris Jayaraj disappoints with his songs and background score, further weakening the overall experience. The cinematography by Rasool Ellore is good in some action episodes. The editing is weak, as the film drags on.

Coming to director Ramesh, he has taken up an old-fashioned concept and presented it in an equally old-school manner, making the overall film highly boring.

Verdict:

On the whole, Bad Boy Karthik is an outdated and disappointing action drama, with both halves failing to make any impact. Naga Shaurya and Sridevi Vijayakumar try their best to save this sinking ship, but the actors can’t make much difference when both the storyline and screenplay are weak and lack a contemporary touch. The emotions fail to connect, and the heavy action in the second half turns into a patience-tester. You can skip this film and look for better options.

Hey Balwanth, the Telugu comedy drama starring Suhas, Naresh, and Shivani Nagaram, has finally reached theatres after building reasonable anticipation through its promotions and title change. Here is the review examining how it fares.

Story:

Since childhood, Krishna Balwanth (Suhas) dreams of taking over his father Rao Balwanth’s (Naresh) business, yet he has no idea what the business actually is, as his father deliberately keeps him away from it. When Krishna finally discovers the truth, he is left shocked and conflicted, and decides to put an end to it. However, unexpected developments complicate his decision, drawing two politicians and Mithra (Shivani Nagaram), Krishna’s lover, into the situation. What exactly is this business, why has Rao Balwanth continued it despite facing criticism, and how these events change Krishna’s life form the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Suhas takes on a role that aligns well with his strengths. He handles the comedy with ease and performs the emotional moments with sincerity. His presence keeps the narrative engaging for a major part of the film.

Naresh delivers a dependable performance as the father. His experience and timing elevate several scenes, especially the interactions between him and Suhas.

Nellore Sudharshan contributes effective humour with his energetic dialogues, while Vennela Kishore adds additional comic relief. The suspense built around the father’s business maintains curiosity and works reasonably well when revealed.

Certain sequences, particularly those involving the women connected to the business, attempt to add emotional perspective. The interval segment provides entertaining moments, and portions of the climax aim to leave an emotional impact. The supporting cast performs adequately within their roles.

Minus Points:

Although the central idea has potential, the screenplay becomes less cohesive in the second half. The introduction of a political angle and a crime-related development shifts the tone and affects the smooth flow established earlier.

Some scenes in the latter half feel prolonged and could have been more concise. A tighter screenplay might have enhanced the overall impact. The emotional portions, while sincere in intent, could have been presented with greater depth and clarity.

The attempt to justify the father’s actions is understandable, though it may not resonate equally with all viewers. The black comedy elements show promise but could have been explored more effectively. Certain character roles, including that of Shivani Nagaram and Harsha Vardhan, have limited scope within the narrative.

Technical Aspects:

Gopi Atchara makes his directorial debut with a film that blends comedy and social commentary. While the intention behind the narrative is appreciable, the execution occasionally lacks consistency, particularly in the latter half. Vivek Sagar’s music supports the film but does not stand out significantly. The cinematography by Mahi Reddy Pandugula is functional. Editing by Viplav Nyshadam could have been sharper to maintain pacing. Production values are satisfactory.

Verdict:

On the whole, Hey Balwanth is a comedy drama that offers moderate entertainment but does not fully capitalise on its potential. The performances of Suhas, Naresh, Sudarshan, and Vennela Kishore provide a few enjoyable moments, especially in the lighter segments. However, the film loses momentum in the second half, where the narrative feels stretched and less cohesive. The central theme, which leans into adult-oriented humour, may connect with a specific section of the audience. With controlled expectations, viewers who prefer light situational comedies may find it a passable watch.

Santosh Sobhan pinned all his hopes on his latest outing, Couple Friendly directed by Ashwin Chandrasekhar. The movie stars Manasa Varanasi as the female lead. The movie hit the big screens with paid premieres and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Siva Sai Prathap a.k.a. Siva (Santosh Sobhan) is a budding interior designer who moves to Chennai in search of a project. He works as a bike taxi rider to make ends meet until he gets a breakthrough. On the other hand, Mithra (Manasa Varanasi) lands an IT job but goes through a tough phase as her offer letter is yet to be released. How the two cross paths and become an important part of each other’s lives forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The best part about Couple Friendly is that the director comes up with relatable characterizations for the lead pair, which makes viewers connect instantly with the film. The struggles faced by youngsters before landing a job are something many can identify with, and all these scenes are neatly written.

The hero and heroine meet because of the tough situations they are caught in, and from this point, the film becomes even more adorable. The way the lead pair cross paths, the manner in which they grow in their lives through combined effort, and how they eventually fall for each other while living under one roof — all these elements are beautifully showcased.

The first half is filled with many tender moments that leave a pleasant smile on our faces. Santosh Sobhan does a very good job as a youngster who strives hard to earn money. The male protagonist’s life is portrayed as miserable, and the actor effectively translates it onto the screen.

Manasa Varanasi is the show-stealer of Couple Friendly without an iota of doub. The actress delivers a fabulous performance as Mithra, and it is one of the finest female lead portrayals in recent times in Tollywood. It’s tough not to fall in love with her magical performance, and she is surely a talent to watch out for.

The lead pair share wonderful chemistry, which makes the proceedings even more engaging. Yogi Babu does well in the supporting role. Others do what is expected of them. After the lead pair, the music stands out in this romantic saga.

Minus Points:

The second half turns heavy unexpectedly. Though handled decently, the main development in the plot is introduced abruptly, and the emotional transition could have been smoother. It’s not that the second hour isn’t good, but it could have been even better.

Since the first half was filled with tender moments, those expecting the second half to stay in the same zone may feel slightly disappointed, as the emotional scenes make one leave the hall heavyhearted. This is something the trailer did not prepare viewers for beforehand.

Technical Aspects:

Generally, when a Telugu film is set in a non-Telugu-speaking region, we see the native characters conversing in Telugu. Thankfully, Couple Friendly gets this aspect right, as we hear Tamil in most of the scenes, giving the film an organic touch.

Shooting in live locations in Chennai is another great decision by the team, and cinematographer Dinesh Purushothaman does a brilliant job. The music by Aditya Ravindran is refreshing and takes the beauty of Couple Friendly a few notches higher. The editing is mostly fine.

Director Ashwin Chandrasekhar does a neat job. He delivers a simple tale filled with likeable characters, cute romantic moments, and decent emotions. The decision to use different aspect ratios to differentiate the timelines is good.

Verdict:

On the whole, Couple Friendly is a decent romantic drama led by solid performances from Santosh Sobhan and Manasa Varanasi, backed by relatable characterizations. The music is pleasant, and the director also does a satisfactory job. The first half is youthful with tender moments, but the second half turns heavy with sudden tonal shift, and the emotional transition could have been handled better. If one expects the latter half to carry the same vibe as the first, they might be slightly disappointed. That said, Couple Friendly can be given a try for its realistic approach.
