Interview: SP Charan – Sita Ramam songs will last forever

Star actor Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming movie Sita Ramam has been in news for a while because of its music. So far, the team has released two songs – Oh Sita Hey Rama and Inthandam. Both the hit tracks were wonderfully sung by SP Charan. On this occasion, we met with him for a brief interview. Here is the transcript.

Your feeling about singing two hit tracks in Sita Ramam?

I am feeling very happy for getting a chance to sing the two songs. I am feeling proud of signing songs that will last for a long time. I am also overwhelmed with the audience’s response.

Tell us about the lyrics of the songs?

I felt the lyrics of Inthandam song are fresh. Krishna Kanth wrote it very well and I also enjoyed the essence of them while singing. I am so thankful to KK for writing such lovely lyrics for this melody.

Working experience with Vishal Chandrasekhar?

Vishal has good sensibilities about cinema and stories. He is the music director with the utmost grip on melody. His programming skills and his desperation for live music are the fine qualities I like in him. I wish him to achieve more heights.

Does the director or producer ever insist you sing like your father?

I have sung more than 1000 songs in my 25 years career. I have been singing like before. Maybe it’s the listeners who changed their perception. They might have been concentrating much on my voice and assuming that it sounds like SP Balu’s voice but I have no such intentions to mimic my father SP Balu.

Tell us about the change you observed in Telugu songs?

Melodies are always there for a long time. But, they evolved unrecognised because of fast-beat songs. People may forget peppy numbers after some time but melodies will last longer and I believe that in the near future, there will be movies with melodies only.

Did you observe any changes in music?

It’s been more than 25 years since I started singing. I am not a bigwig to talk about musical changes in the industry. As a singer, my approach has been unchanged. What I observed is that the young composers are sensible and are focusing much on melodies.

Did you turn producer due to the lack of chances?

Many songs that I have sung for Mani Sharma, Keeravaani, RP Patnaik, DSP and others became sensational hits. But, I don’t know why I get no chances. I never said that I didn’t sing because of being busy as a producer. I am just a call away when the music directors need me.

Any plans to be a music director?

For now, I have no such plans and I feel that I need to achieve more as a singer.
