A massive tragedy has struck legendary composer Ilayaraaja’s household. His daughter, the National Award-winning playback singer and composer, Bhavatharini, breathed her last in Sri Lanka on Thursday evening at around 5:20 pm. Bhavatharini was reportedly taken to Sri Lanka for medical treatment.

As per the latest reports, Bhavatharini was suffering from health issues for the past 5 months. Her brother and popular music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja reportedly took her to an ayurvedic hospital in Sri Lanka, where she was reportedly diagnosed with fourth stage liver cancer. Family members, including Ilayaraaja and his sons Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja, are currently in Sri Lanka to bring back Bhavatharini’s body to Chennai to perform her last rites.

Bhavatharani received the prestigious National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2000 for her rendition of the song ‘Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu’ from the film Bharathi (2000), composed by Ilaiyaraaja. She made her playback singing debut with India’s first 3D film, My Dear Kuttichathan (Malayalam) in 1994. She sang several memorable numbers in popular movies such as Amitabh Bachchan’s Paa, Ajith’s Mankatha, Gundello Godari, Dhanush’s Anegan, and Maanaadu.
