Kollywood top hero Dhanush is a very noted face among the Telugu audience and he enjoys a good following here. This time he has associated with his brother Selvaraghavan who has given the actor cult hits. Titled Nene Vasthunna the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how well it worked.

Story:

Prabhu (Dhanush) works in a construction company and leads a good family life with his wife and daughter. When everything is going well, Prabhu’s daughter Satya starts behaving peculiarly talking to an invisible and imaginary person. Highly worried about his daughter’s condition, Prabhu takes the help of a psychiatrist but that doesn’t give a solution. He calls a few paranormal experts to chase down the problem. During this, a shocking revelation happens which alarms Prabhu. What is it? Who is Satya talking to? Did Prabhu save his daughter? The answers can be known only on the big screen.

Plus Points:

We have been seeing what kind of performer Dhanush is. With Nene Vasthunna the actor once again proves his acting potential. He played a dual role here both as protagonist and antagonist and he nailed the roles to perfection. Dhanush showed an ample amount of variation in both characters. He brought in the innocence required for Prabhu’s role and as Kathir, he is menacing and vicious.

The first half of the film is engaging and it raises curiosity. The story is set up fairly in the initial hour exhibiting the life of Prabhu. A few scenes here are interesting and give thrills. The key twist revealed during the interval episode is good.

The kid who acted as Dhanush’s daughter in the film did very well. In key scenes, the little girl performed with ease and raised the impact. The bonding between Dhanush and the kid is depicted well. Indhuja, Elli AvrRam, Yogi Babu, and Prabhu have limited screen time but they were decent in their respective given roles.

Minus Points:

After an appealing first half, the second half of the film is completely derailed. Due to the bad screenplay, the film loses its grip. It becomes highly predictable and monotonous in this part. Dhanush tries his best to hold the film but sadly the narrative lacks punch as we can foresee the climax from way ahead.

The key links aren’t established well in the movie and they go haywire. A few logics go for a toss which we won’t expect from a master filmmaker. The climax is also underwhelming. Though the film’s runtime is less, we feel bored after a point of time due to the mundane factor.

The story is ages old and it is surprising to see what excited the director and actor here. Had the writing been somewhat better in the latter part the film could have at least been decent.

Technical Aspects:

The background score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is spine-chilling and he tries to save the film all the way. The camera work by Om Prakash is neat. The editing is fine and so is the Telugu dubbing. The production values are good and the makers spent what was required for the film.

The combination of Dhanush and Selvaraghavan will obviously have sky-high expectations but the director failed to match them big time. The fans of Dhanush can be satisfied with his performance but not with the film. Selvaraghavan who is known for making some path-breaking films didn’t repeat his magic.

Verdict:

On the whole, Nene Vasthunna is an underwhelming thriller. The performance of Dhanush is terrific and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is equally exceptional. Apart from these two nothing worked in the film. Selvaraghavan didn’t succeed in coming up with a good script and his screenplay is no different. Except for Dhanush and a few sequences, there isn’t much in the film to rave about. If you are okay with the mentioned flaws, you can give it a try.
