Kotha Bangaru Lokam pair Varun Sandesh and Shweta Basu Prasad have joined forces after nearly two decades for the thriller Naa Wife Missing. It’s a web film that is now available to stream on Aha. Swathi Prakash Mantripragada is the director. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Bala Subramanyam (Varun Sandesh) is an assistant bank manager. He ties the knot with Swapna (Shweta Basu Prasad) in an arranged marriage. From the beginning, all is not well between the couple. One day, they visit a temple, where Swapna goes missing. Bala Subramanyam seeks police support and files a complaint about his wife’s disappearance. Where did Swapna go? Does Bala Subramanyam finally find her? Why are there issues between the couple? The movie has the answers.

Plus Points:

The movie features two key twists, and they are neatly written. The initial portions focus on raising suspicion about both the hero and the heroine, and some moments work well here. Varun Sandesh did a fine job, and so did Shweta Basu Prasad. They succeeded in making their characters seem suspicious. Even after their true motives are revealed, their performances remain consistently good.

The director chose a back-and-forth style of screenplay for this thriller, and it works partially. Praveen, Mohith, and Jabardasth Sathya Sri are decent in their respective roles.

Minus Points:

The film needed strong emotional depth for the twists to work effectively. A character learns the true intentions of another key character and changes all of a sudden, so the moment doesn’t land as intended.

With a view to keeping the runtime crisp, the director left some segments underexplored. The twists are written well, but the manner in which they are revealed could have been much better. The climax needed better execution, as things wrap up quickly without much impact.

Technical Aspects:

Sai Karthik’s music and background score sit well in the context of the film, while Sathish Kumar’s cinematography is fine as well. The production values and editing are passable.

Swathi Prakash Mantripragada’s direction works in parts. There are some good moments in the narrative, but had he paid more attention to the emotional angle, the movie could have been much better.

Verdict:

On the whole, Naa Wife Missing is an okayish thriller with some engaging moments. Varun Sandesh and Shweta Basu Prasad do well in their roles, and the couple of twists are neat. However, the movie needed more emotional depth, and the decision to keep the runtime crisp wasn’t really a wise move, as the overall impact falls short.
