Mahesh Babu is currently busy shooting for Varanasi, his upcoming film with director SS Rajamouli. The project is progressing rapidly, with a major portion of the shoot already completed.
Meanwhile, composer GV Prakash Kumar has revealed an interesting detail about a project that could have brought Mahesh Babu together with acclaimed filmmaker Sudha Kongara.
According to GV Prakash Kumar, Sudha Kongara initially narrated a script to Vijay, who was interested in the project. However, the film required Vijay to commit nearly a year to the project, which did not align with his schedule. Sudha Kongara subsequently approached Mahesh Babu with the same script around 2021. The potential collaboration generated buzz in the Telugu media at the time, but the project ultimately did not materialize with Mahesh Babu either.
Had Mahesh Babu taken up the project, it could have marked a significant milestone for a major Telugu star of his generation: headlining a film directed by a woman. Despite the rise of several talented female filmmakers, stars such as Prabhas, Jr NTR, and Pawan Kalyan have not yet headlined a film directed by a female filmmaker.
There is also a notable connection to Mahesh Babu’s family history. His father, Krishna, worked with Vijaya Nirmala, who was not only a celebrated actress but also a successful filmmaker. Their collaboration remains an important example of a major Telugu star working with a female director.
This makes the missed Mahesh Babu–Sudha Kongara collaboration particularly interesting. Had the project materialized, it could have added a unique milestone to Mahesh Babu’s career while also creating a connection to his father’s legacy.
For now, that opportunity remains unrealized. However, if Mahesh Babu eventually chooses to headline a film directed by a woman, it could become a significant moment in both his career and Telugu cinema.
