GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain expressed hope that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation would be a slum-free zone in the next few years.
In his maiden press conference after being elected as the new GHMC Mayor here on Tuesday, Majid Hussain listed out several schemes that he proposes to implement in the GHMC limits. He said that there of 1,472 notified slums in the GHMC limits, housing schemes for the poor would be taken up in 290 slum under the Rajiv Awas Yojna in the first phase. He said that the GHMC has already short-listed 70 slums where housing would be taken up and another 153 slums would be provided with civic infrastructure facilities at an estimated outlay of Rs 550 crore.
Majid Hussain thanked MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi for nominating him as the party’s candidate for the Mayor’s post. He said that it was in 1986 when MIM leader Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi gave the slogan of “Shaher Hamara, Mayor Hamara” and had its Mayors during 1986-1991. “It is almost after 21 years that the MIM has got the opportunity again to have its mayor in the GHMC and I’m happy to be elected for the post,” he said.
The GHMC Mayor said that besides the implementation of on-going schemes, he would focus more on the development of civic infrastructure in the core city which covers erstwhile MCH and other areas covering 12 municipalities. He said he would try to do justice to all the 150 divisions to ensure that no area lags behind the others in terms of civic amenities.
“Even though GHMC region contributes about Rs 70,000 crore annually to the revenues of the Central and State Government by way of taxes and exports, this premier civic body is not getting its due share of the taxes,” he said adding that efforts would be made to get larger share of revenues for the GHMC. Further, he asked the State Government to increase GHMC’s share in Motor Vehicle Tax, VAT, Profession Tax, Entertain Tax and other sources of revenues. (INN)
