The Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Saturday demanded that the State Government order a detailed probe into the tenders of Polavaram multi-purpose irrigation project.
A delegation of TRS leaders comprising Medak MP Vijayashanti, floor leader Etela Rajender and other MLAs called upon Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the State Secretariat on Saturday asking him to stop the construction works at Polavaram project with immediate effect. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the TRS leaders clarified that their party was against the Polavaram since beginning and has objected to its construction when the party was part of the government in 2004.
The TRS leaders said that they were against the design of the project which could hurt the interests of the Telangana region. They said that the government has already wasted Rs 3,500 crore and despite objections, fresh tenders were called for works amounting to RS 4,717 crore. Demanding detailed enquiry into the tenders, they asked the government to stop the construction.
Instead, the TRS leaders insisted that the government hasten the construction of Pranihita-Chevella project which got all approvals from the Central Government about 18 months ago. They said that although this project would benefit thousands of farmers in the Telangana region, the government was focussed on the controversial Polavaram project.
The TRS delegation also asked the Chief Minister to provide immediate relief to the farmers in the drought-affected areas in the Telangana region. They demanded that the government pay an input subsidy of Rs 15,000 per acre to the affected farmers.
Regarding the recruitment of sub-inspectors in the police department, the TRS delegation demanded that the candidates’ age limit be relaxed by three years. They said since the SIs recruitment was not done for the last three years, it would be appropriate to relax the age limit by three years.
Talking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minister, TRS MLA T Harish Rao said that the party has also made representation on the police excesses on the Telangana leaders and activists. Citing a case, he said Dr Cheruku Sudhakar has been wrongly booked under the PD Act. Similarly, police arrested Warangal East MLA Vinay Bhaskar in the middle of the night. Several MLAs and MPs were booked under non-bailable offences for participating in the Rail Roko. Likewise, a student Yakub Reddy was brutally beaten up in Warangal for raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, he alleged.
Harish Rao said that although the Telangana agitation has been going on for several years, no government including those led by Chandrababu Naidu, YS Rajasekhara Reddy or K Rosaiah resorted to extreme actions against the activists. He said the Chief Minister has agreed to order a probe into all the incidents and take suitable action after getting the report.
TRS MLA K Tarakarama Rao, S Satyanarayana, T Rajaiah and Jogi Rammana were also part of the delegation. (INN)
